I just bought a 1976 XLCH, it has aelectric starter added to it but the previous owner did not complete the conversion. He did not change the battery tray and oil tank. I purchased all the parts I need from a local swap meet. I am putting it together with the larger tray and side oil tank. Need help with position of oil tank. There is a tab on the top left of the oil tank that bolts to the frame, my frame does not have a tab I need toadd one. I need to know how far down does this tab need to be. It looks to be about 2 inch from pics I have seen. I also need to know where the tray mounts on the other side of the bike. There is a bracket that is about 5 inches long with several square holes going up and down. I need to know which hole to bolt to. thank for your help.
Oiltank and battery tray are mounted to frame with rubber mounting "thing" ( I don't know correct name for that part) first there is 1/4" UNF treath ( bolt) then about 3/4" thick rubber and same 1/4" bolt in other end. If I remember correct there were 3 of those mountings one under battery tray in primaryside and 2 in upper frame tube chain side. This is just dark image from memory...
Thank You for the reply. What I am looking for is the location of the metal tab on the frame. I was hopeing someone could take measurements from there bike. You can see the tab I circled in the above pic, my bike does not have this tab. I need to weld it on. Also which hole to use on the primary side, same I thought somrone could look at there bike and count the holes.

I may be able to offer you a little help on the battery tray mount. (But not the oil tank)
The bracket you need to weld on has 4 square holes and 2 round holes. The rubber mounts go in the round holes (top & bottom of the bracket).
Rubber mount is shown in photo 1. These are available at MSC, and elsewhere.
The 4 square holes are there to act as an 'electrical terminal board'. Each hole takes a plastic insert pushed into it and then you can connect your wires to these insulated terminals, such as the tail light, brake light, starter solenoid etc. 2 terminals are shown in photo 2.
The welded on metal bracket itself is really difficult to photograph. I tried with photo 3.
I will do another post later with perhaps a sketch and dimensions of this piece.
The position of the welded on piece is very much determined by the battery tray back plate which has the mount holes that attach to the rubber mounts which then attach to the 2 holes top and bottom of the welded on bracket. Yeah I know that really makes sense, sorry.
Hope this helps so far.........pg
Here is a hand drawn sketch of the bracket with the dimensions you need to make it and weld on to the frame tube.
Again, the 3 1/8 dimension is from the centerline of the yoke down on my 1971 frame, so your frame will be different.
The battery bracket holes will dictate how far down you position the weld on bracket.
On my 76 i have2 tabs and 3 holes for bolts, the bottom tab on mine is bolted to a bracket that sits in between the starter motor and the solenoid and bolted to the engine, theother tab is bolted to the frame with those rubber thingys, the 3 bolt holes are screwed in from the battery box, thats how mine is done i can put pic up if you want.
Yes Heavy.clutch, that is what I am looking for. I figured out most of what you said, but I what I need to know is where is the metal tab on the framethat the top tab on the oil tank is located? How many inches down from the fender support bracket is it? Also does your battery tray bolt with the rubber thing in the bottom of the several hole bracket on the primary cover side?
I have the primary cover side bracket you where nice enough to desribe in detail already on my bike. On that side I was asking which hole to use for the new battery tray. It sounds like it will be the bottom round(square holes for connections). My big question is where to weld the tab on my frame for the top bolt of the oil tank. My frame is a kicker and does not have that tab. Thank you again for your time.
The rubber mount goes in the top round hole in that welded on bracket. So, the battery plates bolts to this at the top.
I am uncertain if a second rubber mount is required at the bottom hole, but I think in needs one there as well. Been awhile since I had mine off.
The front of the battery tray should have a tab that bolts to the backside of the crankcase primary. That gives it support at 3 locations.
Sorry, I cannot really help much with hoe the side oil tank goes on........pg
Where the arrow is it measures 4cm or just over 1 and a half inches, do you have the 3 holes on the battery box, you could mount the oil tank to that then you get a rough idea where toweld the tab. Paul
I forgot to mention that the bottom tab on the oil tank dosent seem to line up with the bracketon my bike.
