So how many of you have been here before........
Yah so exactly what the title says. How many of you have been in this situation before? I'm sure quite a bit.
or how about this?
Or better yet, having to call the beautiful, patient, loving wife to come do this?
Root cause of the problem...............................
In case you can't tell that's the bottom of my mikuni VM38 carb. What you see there is my main jet. Some how my float bowl plug loosened itself free. I kid you not I tightened that thing down so much that my *** cheeks actually started to hurt from straining so much, end result.......it's still gone!
Moral of the story kids.......................invest in some thread locker.
Piniongear...you remember how you were saying the other day to me in another thread about how I should take extra care of the parts on my mikuni as finding replacement parts for the VM38 are very hard to do since they discontinued the carb a few years back.....yah well guess how hard its going to be to find that part!!!
Oh well....guess the ole ironhead is back in the garage for a couple of days until I find a replacement part!
Okay now proceed with laughing at me at your will!

When I saw the first couple of photos I thought, How nice. Randy stopped along the road to take some photos of his pride and joy.
Then your wife has to pull up with the trailer and ruin the story. Heh-Heh.

OK, the part may be hard to find, but it looks like all you need is the plug. The main jet and jet body are still in place, correct?
Call Mikuni tomorrow and see if this plug for the bottom of the VM38 float bowl is available.
It is only a plug, and this may be used on a currently made Mikuni.

Wow thanks PG. Luckily, my main jet and main jet extender was intact and all I lost was the plug, gasket, and probably 4 or so dollars of gas (good thing was that I had on my stain defender docker's so the gas just rolled off my pants) LOL.
Another good thing is that I found a snowmobile site that had the parts I needed. So I got it ordered for 10 dollars total.
I can't tell you how nice it is that you were willing to help me out and try to make a plug for me. Thats spectacular there. You truly have the biker spirit. Helping another biker out as much as you can to get them back on the road.
I tell you what if your ever in the Tennessee area make sure to send me a message because I'd like to buy you dinner.

Ok Randy, glad you found the part.
Remember, some of those Mikuni round slide parts are very difficult to find, so take of it. The Mikuni is still the best carb I have ever put on a Sportster.
My wife plans to go ride her bicycle somewhere in Tennessee this fall at a Multiple Sclorosis Ride and of course I will trailer a sickle with me when we go. So, you never know. I may take you up on the offer of a hamburger.

Pinion I was under the impression that you were a fan of the Bendix carb. Do you prefer the Mikuni over the Bendix?

You are correct. I am a great fan of the Bendix. I run one on my ironhead.
The Mikuni is also a very good carb. In fact, it is the best carb I have ever had on it!
Now, there are a couple of problems with the Mikuni that make me run the Bendix.
First off, I like the original hard wire throttle cable (like a lawn mower has) and the Mikuni needs a flexible braided throttle cable. One strike against the Mikuni.
Strike 2......The Mikuni will start the ironhead with a single kick of the engine. The Bendix will also, but sometimes it takes 2 kicks with the Bendix. Good for the Mukuni of course.
What I do not like about the Mikuni is the fact that the engine runs and idles so smoothly with the Mikuni carb that it makes it sound like a BSA twin. The Bendix allows the engine to make the lopping Harley sound. That is what I have against the Mikuni. It is too danged good!
So I run the Bendix (as long as that 'O' ring is in good condition) most of the time........pg

yah the only problem I have with the mikuni is that the dang main jet plug falls out. lol!
