Default rear rocker box removal

Is it possible to get the rear rocker box off without removing the head on a 71 XLCH. My manual does not indicate this....it looks like one of the bolts is obstructed by the frame. I'm guessing the head has to come (slide) off? yes???? thanks....ferg

The rear head has to come off with the rocker box attached. It has to go back on the same way of course........pg

You're not going to believe this, but I actually got my rear rocker box off my '81 XLS to replace a leaking gasket without taking the rear head off with it. It was a bugger to get off with all but a couple of bolts out of it but I wormed it out and off. No gouges in the box either.

I noticed that yourecomended Permatex no.3 on the gearcase cover in another thread.
Would you alsorecommend it used on the rocker box cover gasket?

Yes indeed! I use #3 for all the gasket surfaces and the reason is because this is a non hardening sealer. Two years later when you have to do it again you are able to clean the aluminum surfaces fairly easy, and without gouging the aluminum.
Compared to (if you had used hardening type) cleaning off some other stuff, #3 is very easy.

Maybe the top tube on an '81 frame is a bit different than the older frames? Oh heck, I know it is different!
Did the rocker box go back on easily, or was this as much of a struggle as taking it off?

It actually came off easier than reinstalling it. Trying to hold the bolts that had to go under the frame made it a pain.

Can't speak for the later bikes, but you sure couldn't take the rear rocker off on any of mine without remvoing the head!
