laugh everyone if yall want.....i never really learned how to tune a carb.i generally just dont mess with them.
its an s&s shorty......it was running rich when i got the bike a few months ago.----backfireing...carbon buildup...rich.-----anyway long story short....as i look at the carb theres 3 screws...one buy the 2 cables and on the other side by the pumper thingy and the last one in the center.according to what ive read the center screww is suppose to be leaning it out by turning it in.....and basically when all is said and done it will be about 1 1/2 turns up from base.i never got to that point as it increased rpms(way high)....so i decided to try the exact opposite and backed it out....just ran like @#$%.tried getting it to a good place but even then when throttling it the idleing rpms will change drastically.-------i wouldnt have jacked with but i already knew it wasnt right and i just replaced the mismatched carbon fouled plugs with new hd's.i want to fix this so i can move on to another problem haha.i hate carbs and i hate expensive electronic things as well...anyway if anyone wants to hold my hand ....
i will get that info soon.i knew but i have a bad memory...
i dont really hate carbs i just kinda hate myself for not being good with something that should be easy but for some reason never seem to get...if that makes sense.
btw i checked the archives and iam sure the info is there somewhere but everything i saw had to do with something else.
Sounds like you got ahold of the idle air fuel mixture adjustment.Check out this instruction sheet at S&S.Tuning and adjustment procedure is near the end..http://www.sscycle.com/modules/instr...ds/51-1012.pdf
the idle air mix screw is the one on the top that is cut in a cross...this one should be set 1 1/2 turns out from fully in...but that is not why the bike is running rich...
the secondary for a sporty should be .028 and the main .068 these jets are in the carb body and you will see them when you drop the bowl.
If the jets are 028 and 068 the problem is most likely ignition
ok thanks pitt---i looked at that and it said basically what i read before.for some reason my carb screw is working backwards.....???? i will try again tomorrow and take my time.thanks.
The screw by the cables is the idle. The screw by the "pumper thingy" is the accelerator pump. The brass screw in the middle is the mixture screw. Turn off the acc. pump to make adjustments by turning it in all the way. Make sure the enrichener ( the thing on top that you pull up to start it) isn't stuck in the up position. If you have the right jets, yes, the mixture screw 1 and 1/2 turns out will give you a starting point. Make sure the bike's hot, and make sure you don't have an air leak in the intake rubber bands. You wouldn't believe how easy it'll leak if the support strut is not locked down good. I'm assuming you have the super E, not the G. As the G is too big for sporties in my opinion.
"pumper thingy"---i wonder how many people cringed when i said that
anyway it is an E.i havent had a chance to yet to try again though.everything stated is about what i thought......but for some reason clockwise on themixture screw brings the idle up not down and there is just no way i could put it at only 1 1/2 turns out.
i would just take it in someplace even though i hate/have bad luck with/dont trust doing that but the harley dealership is about 20 miles away....they dont touch anything custom or anything over 10 yrs old(told friend) the next place is about 30 miles away and i have no ride back anyway....so time to learn.
i will try again with an open mind and look for air leaks.
thanks everyone-i backed way off the idle...screwed fuel mixture screw all the way in..cleaned plugs again.went by book(i am about 1 out right now)...cleaned plugs again and anyway.....running pretty good.
i dont know about the whole "backwards screw" thing.i feel pretty stupid saying that honestlyi suppose it was running so rich that it was partially flooded and the extra air raised the rpms.....i dont know...that sounds good so i will stick with that.---anyway...thanks all.
i guess i had given up on carbs a long time ago because it seems some people just have a knack of hearing richness and leaness in engines.screaming over a revving enginewith a screwdriver in hand.--thanks again.
