Default 1968 xlch shifting issues, please help!!

I have a 1968 xlch ironhead, I was riding the other day with no issues at all. I parked my bike and when I came back a couple of hours later and started it. I tried to shift it into first and it wouldn't go, so I shifted into 2nd and tried to bring it back down and it wouldn't go. I then shifted into third and tried to bring it back into 2nd, no dice. I did this until I was in 4th and now I can't get it out of 4th even when it is not running. Does any one have any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Thanks,

Pikey

The easiest trans/clutch problems are those that are resolved by adjusting the clutch, so that is what i would try first.

Note that the clutch is not adjusted at the handlebar like on many other bikes. There is a specific 5 or so step process given in the manual, and it must be followed exactly. If you do not have the factory manual i can give you another website where the procedure is published.

Of course, you should have the factory manual.

I do not know enough about clutches and transmissions to offer any other help. Others may.

to adjust the clutch loosen off the screw on the lever till there is slack in the lever, then move over to the sprocket cover ou will see a screw/nut combo in the center * attached pic* with a boxed wrench lossen the nut, then turn the screw in the center out till it is slack and then turn back in again till it jus touches the push rod *you will feel it get a bit of tension when turning * while holding the screw from turning lock the nut back in place with the wrench. then move up to the lever and adjust it till theres just a bit of slack 1/8th - 1/4" of free movment of the lever.

if this procedure is incorrect let me know cause this is how i been doing mine for ages LOL

Mick,

Thanks for such a quick response! I don't have an original manual for this bike, could you send me a link to the steps to adjust the clutch.
Thanks,

Pikey

Make sure the primary/trans has the proper amount of oil also.

This is important, too much or too little is bad for clutch operation.

Hey my fellow Canuck, your procedure is close but has some missing steps. Check this thread from another forum ...

And +1 on checking both the type and level of fluid in the primary. If you do not know what is in there drain it and install 1.5 pints, 24 oz [or until it drips from the oil level hole with the bike level, then wait until it stops dripping] of HD Formula+. Lots of other choices, but use this first, experiment later if you wish. Many guys think it takes a full quart - error!!! or worse, they fill the thing up - huge error!!!!!
