My tender works the same as micks, I can touch the leads together and it won't spark or blow the fuse. It apparently " knows" when there is a battery involved.
If you want to know if it's working, just read the battery voltage before you connect the tender. Then after you've had the tender on for a couple minutes check the battery voltage with the tender still connected, and you'll see a higher voltage if it is actually working.
Just hooked my tender to my XLCH and before I began charging, the battery volts were 11.99 and after turning on tender for a couple minutes the battery volts were 12.25.
Then I hooked my ammeter in line and watched for about a minute as the current flow decreased from 600 milliamps to 510 and so on down.
