Regarding aftermarket builds - My 120 is an aftermarket build and sumped once. The Feuling pump and plate I have had in for around 8K+ miles has solved it, at least at this point. I have external breathers with PCV valves on the ends as well. They were installed several thousand miles after the pump change.
I have talked with several pro builders who have had their builds sump. There is a lot of aftermarket effort to solve the problem in development, but I'm not at liberty to say other than concerns about breathing.
If this is the only place you are getting information from regarding sumping, you are a bit myopic. You may do well to search out other places of information. There are a lot of very experienced people working the issue.
Yeah I knew I remembered one instance of an aftermarket build sumping and that would be yours. I might be a bit myopic, but if it was a rampant problem with the aftermarket builds I think we would have heard more on this forum. The breathers could be part of the problem. I still kind of think that there's a combination of factors that cause it. When enough of the factors are met then the motor sumps. With yours, the addition of an aftermarket oil pump corrected a factor and it stopped sumping. Possibly the check valves on the breathers also corrected a factor.
Apparently the MOCO's oil pump seal is having some success. I do think if they had reviewed the development of the TwinCam and used the same means that was used to correct sumping with the TwinCam they wouldn't have had the problems they've had. I can't say with certainty that it would've done the same thing for the M8, there are other differences that may have kept it from working. I don't think we will ever know for sure. I wouldn't put it past the MOCO to make changes that fix the problem and just never say anything about it. It really wouldn't make much sense for them to advertise it as most owners don't even know it is a problem.
Thanks for the post Stone. I’ve seen first hand how technical expertise leaks (or is squeezed) out of product manufacturing companies. The toll often doesn’t show up til much later.
I wonder how many “retired” HD folks are watching this...
Not at all unique to HD nor to any industry. Simply a reality for most companies in many industries.
