The more I think about what badcooky said the HD Australia guys were saying, the more I think the cold oil level check is worthless, or perhaps worse than worthless. If oil has collected in the sump, and you shut the bike down, the next cold oil check will probably show it as being very low, since the pump didn't have an opportunity to scavenge the sump and move the oil back where it belongs. Which will likely lead you to fill up the bike, which is in fact over-filling it, which could lead to all sorts of problems.
A hot oil check seems like the only sane way to check the oil on an M8 which is suspected of perhaps having sumping issues. Let it idle for two minutes, which should theoretically give it a chance to get all the oil back where it belongs.
Just thinking about it, it makes sense. Any flaws with this idea?
no, I was taught very early on that hot oil check is the most accurate, consistent and reliable method...follow the manufacturers recommendation which obviously concurs
You don't know that. It may be an accurate statement. We would have to know the source of his assertion. But just based on the number of reported cases of sumping here, it would seem like actual observed sumping cases are more like 0.000000001% of the bikes on the road. (because the odds of someone's bike sumping, and them doing internet research, and reporting it, seem a lot higher).
How many members are there here, and how many have reported sumping? Do the math, it's not a big percentage.
And as badcooky reported, HD AU has told their dealers that 1.2% of the M8's have reported sumping. AU is not a huge market, but Australians own more HDs per capita than Americans do, so the ratio could well be accurate for the US market too.
Yet. The warranty is good for at least another year for most '17 owners, and nearly two years for most '18 owners.
#1 Harley-Davidson 4,433 sales
Harley-Davidson retains its position as the number one road bike seller in Australia with 4433 sales in the first half of 2017, although this was down 5.4 per cent compared to the same period in 2016. This compares to their Q1 sales in 2017 only being 1.1 per cent lower than the same period in 2016. Strong sellers include the Harley-Davidson FXSB Breakout with 711 sales, up 17.5 per cent, while the Street 500 also remains strong despite sales falling 18 per cent to 609 units. The FXDLS Low Rider S also posted strong growth of 74.3 per cent to 373 units sold, with the VRSCDX Night Rod Special also selling 305 units but down 6.2 per cent. What was the numbers for m8's is the question though
That is TOTAL BS right there! You must own MoCo stock or work for 'em.
Also, they have to know what's causing the problem and how to fix it for the "great warranty" to be worth ****. In the case(s) of sumping and tranny oil transfer they DON'T.
Couldn't believe it when we got right through to page 3 encouraging a fellow Harley enthusiast not to worry and take on his dream ride.
Should have known Mr I'm miserable because I don't have an M 8,would jump out the closet and sing the only song he knows!
I can say that I have never met anyone with any model of Harley that transferred or sumped , in my Life!
not fair..I concur with Peter..we've had 10 new Harleys over 13 years and rode with our chapter all over God's green earth, rallies, you name it...and until my 2017 minor trans fluid transfer never heard of this or sumping..from anyone, anytime or anywhere
This statement would be spot on if the bike in question was anything other than a Harley. The dealer network is very large. It is really hard to break down far away from a dealer. You will always be closer to a harley dealer than any other dealer.
So u are on a 3000 mile trip and your motor is damaged far from home. Not much comfort that warranty will do you if you are stuck in a hotel room waiting a week for parts or a motor. Just saying. I just bought my M8.
Id rather have a motor with so few issues, people couldn't string them together under one name like "sumpin". It was just $25k+.
