Why does higher octane alone give better gas mileage?

Yup, that math works, I just didn't think you could add a quarter inch of bore without case boring.

Higher octane does NOT assure better gas mileage. It's a very old wise tail, that some still believe.

Not a wives tale. High octane allows running higher compression which does produced better mileage.

Sure if your building a new engine, but just adding higher octane to and engine that does not need it, typically will lower the fuel economy hence the Old wise tail. Since 87/89/91 has been the fuel standards in the USA for going on 10 + years now, the engines are designed to run on those octanes. Building a new engine to run on say 93 octane or 95 octane is completely different. Putting in higher octane fuel than what is needed typically only lowers the level of dollar bills in your wallet.

You mean the group that decided it would be a great idea to force ethanol in our gas?

I know, I wanted to know if the person claiming that knew.

Yes, raising CR allows higher octane with the result of better engine efficiency, but notice I said "alone". Raising octane results in a slower, but more consistent burn. One that is not as susceptible to hot-spot preignition.
