Default Cam Install Problems

2017 FLTRXS, no sumping, no transfer, 16K miles. Installed cams in my last two TC motors, no issues. Bought parts on the Forum, all new. S&S 465C, latest HD pump, latest backing plate with seal, SE adjustable PRs, Larry's 842SE lifters, S&S lifter tappet cuffs. Didn't replace the feed side gerotor, it was in good shape.

R&R was as simple, or even easier than the TCs. Buttoned it all back up after adjusting the PRs to 2.5 turns per SE directions. spun the motor over with plugs out to get some oil going. Fired it up and there's considerable clacking up top in the rockers that doesn't go away. Idiot light for oil pressure says ok. Only ran it for about 30 seconds upright on a lift. Repeated the install/adjustment of the PRs to see if I was off somewhere in the adjustment, fired up again same result. Decided to tear it all back down today and validate the install.

When I took the cam cover off, a considerable amount of oil came out, I was surprised by that. It was above the bottom of the cam plate. There wasn't that much oil in there the first time around. Yes, both o-rings were in place on the feed and scavenge at the pump. There was oil inside the cam plate, inside the pump itself, and in the passages out of the cam chest so it seems the pump was working. Oil was getting up through the PRs as it came out the holes in the PRs when I took them out. The outside of the PRs weren't really wet with oil, but the stockers weren't either IIRC.

Disassembled the pump and carefully inspected, everything seems fine. No bad surfaces or anything. There doesn't appear to be a lot of differences between a mid 2017 pump and the latest other than the scavenge port size. Cam plate looks fine, everything looks fine really. I'm quite sure I had the cam on the base circle per cylinder when I adjusted the PRs. I used the SE PRs on my TCs, so it's not my first time with those. Not sure if I was off there, like some folks say 3.5 turns on higher lift cams or if I have an oiling problem. Hate to not use the latest pump and backing plate, but I've given thought to just putting the originals back in.

I was just going to carefully assemble again and maybe go a little deeper on the lifter preload and triple check I'm totally on the base circle when doing it. But after seeing that much oil come out of the chest I'm not sure. Those of you that have done cams, would you expect that much oil in the cam chest after running the bike upright for 30-45 seconds?

Another thing, while inspecting the new pump and bringing over the original feed gerotor I'm sure I kept the orientation (inside/outside) of the gerotors as they were (feed and scavenge). It's possible while looking at things I got them out of their original orientation. They appear to be symmetric, so I'm not sure that would be too much of an issue but I'm throwing it out there.

Appreciate any thoughts and discussion.

Did you turn the engine over and over after the first 2 oil pump locator bolts were snug and then follow the tensioning sequence correctly?

Did you inject the new lifters with oil before you installed them? If not and sometimes even if you did, it takes a little time to get all of the air out of the lifters. Since I wasn’t there I don’t know how badly it was clattering, just throwing this out there. Also, I have always adjusted SE pushrods 3 turns. A little extra preload isn’t going to hurt anything unless you’re racing and going for peak rpm.

I have been in my cam chest twice, each time I caught the oil that came out, both times it was 12 oz

Should not have to go deeper on preload

was the oil pump seated fully? takes a bit of push to make sure its seated and cam plate seats against the case, although tightening the plate would most likely seat the pump as the bolts were drawn down.

could it be you did not run the engine long enough for the lifters to pump up?

Thats all I got for ya.

Yes sir. Followed the updated guidance from H-D. There wasn’t any binding and could hear lots of suction when rotating. It should have been centered, but I’ll take extra time when I put it back together.

Don't panic you'll get it , these boys know too. The setting deeper in the lifter you're going to get opinions on that too , don't let it side track you, just make sure you're at the depth of the lifter for the brand and type you are using ,you can try the depth after you find the issue or all if else fails. You will get it.Could it be a faulty lifter or failing lifter ?
Peace

Did not inject the lifters, figured why wait even longer for them to bleed down during PR adjustment. Just worked assembly lube into the rollers, put a bit on the outside and installed them. The clattering wasn't like "oh **** turn it off" levels, but it wasn't quieting down as fast as I would expect and didn't want to do damage. I'll go 3 turns next time around and see what happens.

Pump was seated, nice solid thump as I pressed it in. Maybe got paranoid and shut it off early. Thanks for confirming how much oil you got out of the chest, that does make me feel a bit better on that front.

Thanks. I always ran my TC PRs a bit deeper just to try and keep the valve train a little quieter. I know it can be a religious war.

I suppose one of the lifters could be bad, not sure how I'd test that. The stock lifters were trash at 16K miles so can't put those back in.

I have a set of Gaterman TC lifters from an old project, suppose I could throw those in if it's still noisy after assembly.

It is probably not a lifter but if you get to the point of the process of elimination hasn't worked swap them out.I said not to get caught up in the lifter depth but you could try that just to see..Whether you've rebuilt one engine or hundreds , that first start up is always a thing. You will get it.

Peace
