This is not true, it’s only the tuner that’s the issue, they can’t void anything if it’s been 50, state legal certified. And that’s only 2017 and up bikes
NO, HD has since 2017 been making rules up as they go. Currently they are voiding powertrain warranty for ANY modification to the powertrain! This includes but not limited to slip-on mufflers, exhaust, engine components, Air Cleaners and tuners, they are ALL treated the same, VOIDED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. If you look in the parts books adding their components REQUIRES a ECM reflash and the only one they accept is their Street Tuner. There are no calibrations certified for any parts but HD's is their opinion, so they void the warranty. Doesnot matter if the parts are legal or not! They are now requiring dealers to take pictures of the bikes and parts and submit them to get warranty approval, prior to doing the work. They may or maynot send a factory rep out to look it over.
They should just be honest and say no warranty. Pretty clear that what they are after. Imagine the bump to the bottom line if they never have to cover another warranty.
The dead give a way here s that I can get a stage 4 on a new bike and warranty is intact, yet I install a set of slip ones on a stock bike I lose the warranty. Are they really building stage 4 bikes with the cat and a street tuner?
Sorry for the rant on this issue but every time I buy a new bike I go through this and usually end up tossing the warranty to the wind.
honestly I can't believe this whole voiding powertrain warranty topic is still confusing people
There's a huge section that explains the Limited Powertrain Warranty terms and conditions in your OWNERS MANUALS
It clearly states that the terms and conditions stated are a contract between the manufacturer and the owner, and that dealerships are independent and therefore the Manufacturer cannot be held responsible to cover violations performed / allowed by dealerships.
There's separate sections on Noise, Emissions and Performance modifications. I've read mine and do not struggle understanding what can or cannot be done to my motorcycle as it pertains to maintaining warranty coverage.
For those that want to keep it simple just use the approved SE parts and be done with it. Or modify stuff outside of those and enter at your own risk.
Why in the World would any manufacturer allow those who changed things outside of the parameters of their stated terms and conditions to bring it in for troubleshooting and repairs and cover the expenses?
Well said mjwebb and confirmation from Steve Cole.
Bottom line the manual/paperwork from any manufacturer s the Bible and up tp you if you want to take a chance by ignoring it.
HD isn't alone but if it's an issue for you you can buy another companies product or buy an HD that is out of warranty, you'll save a boatload of money, in fact the savings will pay for a massive upgrade from companies like Steve's and you'll have the bike you really want. )
This is demonstrably false. I've had 3 M8 engines replaced under warranty, all with aftermarket slip ons.
Not to mention that many bikes on showroom floors across America, are sitting there with aftermarket slip ons already on them. Can they void your warranty for slip ons? Technically I guess they could. Will they? I seriously doubt it! What mechanical failure could be a direct result of a slip on thats not HD branded?
And yes, as MJ said....I cant believe ppl are still debating the EPA/warranty issue. And I cant believe this has turned into yet another warranty thread again.
What surprises me more than HD doing what they do is that everyone seems to just accept it. The Magneson-Moss act says that they have to prove that the part in question caused the problem. I don't know what I'm going to do with this new bike yet. I might do a dealer Stage 2, might do my own stage 1 or 2, might just do a set of slip-ons for now and not mess with the tune. I did a RK that way and it was fine. I do know that if I take the bike in for a warranty clutch problem and they deny it because is has non dealer performed mods, I'll be asking to see the evidence that those mods caused the problem. I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper for them to fix the clutch than to chase that rabbit through the hole.
Insurance works the same way. If there is any chance that they might get out of paying a claim, they deny it knowing that most people will just accept that. Very few will fight them. Same with these warranty claims.
