I tried to search on this topic and cannot get a hit. So Im gonna ask the question here. When attempting to engine brake on my 17 Ultra Limited during a quick decel (to conserve brakes and be in first gear at stop), the clutch is not engaging in 3-2-1, again on quick decel. Is this a clutch switch issue or is the engine speed to fast for the clutch to engage in the selected gear? On previous bikes, never had an issue downshifting at any speed except to be careful not to cause rear tire to lock. Ive had this issue since I purchased the bike w 7K mi on it about 9 mns ago. I really dont like fully relying on the brakes during a quick decel, although ABS does help. I prefer to engine brake by downshifting from 5-3-2-1 but the clutch or tranny is not responding to the drivers commands. Anyone have this issue? Thanks all.
P.S. On a separate note, just installed the Rinehart 45 Moto Pro 4.5 muffs and love them. Air intake and head pipes stock at this point. Seems to have provided a deeper, slightly louder note compared to stock muffs. May or may not do full Stage 1 later. Will see how she runs after muffs broken in.

Are you letting the clutch lever out all the way after downshifting?
Yes, Im squeezing the clutch but the tranny is not slipping into the next gear selected. I have only experienced this with this FLHTK. As I said, all other bikes Ive had will let you engine break upon downshifting.
Well, Im due for my 10K service and plan on asking about this issue. I am under a valid ESP for another 4+ months. Im trying to find out here on the Forum if theres a problem with the bike or its just the way these horses are engineered. Id like to hear from someone who has had the problem and found a solution...whether Stealer service or otherwise. Thanks.
Ive noticed when you click a through a bunch of gears the transmission gets like lost. I dont think this is a designed feature just a flaw with the transmission. It happens to me when I like pull over to the side of a highway and go from like 6-2 and let the clutch out. It gets to like a point where I cant figure out what gear Im in and even if I click all the way down its not in first. I end up just trying to get it to like engage whatever gear Im In using a lot of clutch and when it kinda finds a gear then I can click down to 1st. But transmission works great if Im sequential about my shifts or only skip one gear.

Yes, I have just as you describe YheHateMe. Fairly often too. Its like the tranny is shifting with a delay and looses its way. As youve said, come to a stop, nurse it back in a gear it can find, then downshift from there to 1. Unfortunately, that does not work when youre engine braking to accomplish a quick decel. Youre forced into using both brakes to slow her down quickly. I really dont think its a synergy thing either as suggested by Agoober. These bikes should be well engineered enough to accomplish a normal fast downshift such as 6-4-3-2-1 or 5-3-2-1 in a shorter stopping distance. Maybe I need to stick some fast blips in there to gain engine-tranny sync, but thats not fun either when youre trying to perform a quick decel. I still think this bike has an issue. Tranny or clutch or clutch switch or lever sensor or some damn thing. This should not be an issue. Cant believe somebody else out there hasnt had this issue and resolved it somehow. Will hand loose.

You need to read how a constant mesh synchronous transmission works..... They can't go multiple gear changes while stopped by design. The system needs to be moving.
Engine braking is not the proper way to do a quick deceleration. Use your brakes. Trying to manage engine braking while stopping rapidly increases the chances of locking up the rear wheel and is less effective than just using the brakes.
If I slow quickly I just downshift as I slow down, holding the clutch in. Sometimes I might have to let it out a bit if the transmission won't readily drop into the next gear.
