Default Relocating oil filter

I have seen lotsa stuff on using different oil filters, oils, changing procedures, etc.

Is there a clean way to relocate the oil filer on a twin cam? I hate the OEM location.

unless you want it sticking outside the frame or blocking engine cooling, i really don't see where you could put it. I know it sucks to change oil, I think the real issue is they shold have designed it with about another 1/4-1/2 inch clearance.

I'm blissfully and happily Twinkie ignorant - how are the oil lines connected to the existing filter mount? And is the filter mount a part of the engine case or is it separate?

If the lines are external you can go to NAPA or someplace that sells Wix parts and get an oil filter mount. I bought one for my Evo to mount the filter vertically instead of the horizontal position. Also,I think J&P sells a kit that mounts to the front motor mount, or maybe the regulator mount.

I don't see the big deal with the oil filter in the front location. It is easy to get to and is messy.....that is unless you get creative. Even with the mess, just clean it.....either way, it really isn't a big deal.

The filters located on my once owned 1984 FXRT and 1985 Tourglide, the oil filters were mounted underneath the engine. That was a decent location, except on some bikes that were lowered.....you simply had to raise the motorcycle off the ground to gain access. Who really wants to raise a motorcycle off the ground just to change the oil filter anyways?

The factory could have moved things around just a little to allow more room between the filter and the engine itself. Like I said, it really is not a big deal though.

That is excellent work ... Pure function and good engineering went into that mod - It even acts as a oil cooler this way, although it wouldn't be very efficient compared to radiator style coolers

This would be a prime candidate for one of those oil cooler sleeves that clamp onto the oil filter ... It would protect the filter from anything that might be kicked up by the front tire, and it would be directly in the main air stream, so it would be at it's maximum efficiency

Nice job

Pococj, nice but....

List the parts and stuff. I may not like your position, but with your setup I can put the oil filter anywhere I want.

messey is a big point, but - if I can move the position I can use a bigger filter (read more filter area) and save the mess. I hate cleaning it up and fiddling with stuff to not make it messy.

Finally an oil related thread that actually has some merit to it! Any other ideas along these line? I hate the mess and having to use half a can of brake clean at every oil change too....

Took me awhile to dig up the receipt. The filter base is from NAPA, part no. 4762. It's probably made by Wix, so any joint that sells Wix will be able to get it, too.

I have a Perf Form oil filter/cooler on m,y 99 EVO. It looks like a chrome tin can, sits out in front in the wind, and is easy to change out. You have to use their own brand of filter.
