Default Too Much Oil In 07 Ultra Crankcase - Consequences??

[8D]
The dealer recently completed the 1600 km scheduled maintenance on my 2007 Ultra. I happened to notice during a (cold engine) pre-ride inspection that thecrankcase oilhad been topped up to thehot level as indicated on the dip stick. Should I be concerned? Will any damage result from this oversight? I suppose this episode gives credence to those that do this routine work themselves. I'm going to start by the way!

Main problem is it venting through the AC and overflow tube. Unlike a set up where the oil can be whipped into a froth by the pushrods like an old car, you will not experience mechanical damage. Some bikes with synthetic oil read the same, hot or cold. My 04 Wideglide did. Darndest thing. My 06 Roadglide does NOT and reads half way up cold and at the fullmark hot.

Relax and siphon some off, no harm, no foul.

What EZ2Ride said.

Because it isn't that the CRANKCASE is overfilled, but the OIL TANK. This is an advantage of the dry sump system.

Just for the sake of it I got back to the Service Department ................. based on what EZ stated I started thinking that (maybe?) synthetic oils didn't change volume with temperature ............ how foolish, eh? Anyway, we had a good discussion and they use 20w 50 in the sump.

Well, just for info., both my Touring bike and Dynas use the oil pan, not a seperate oil tank. My 04 Dyna, using Amsoil, registered full when cold and hot. It made me go hmmmmm.........................

My 06 Roadglide, taking a full qt. more oil than a Dyna, registers just above the mid mark on the dipstick cold and at the full mark when hot. This has held true with both SynIII (from the "free" 1K), Amsoil 20/50 and the Redline 20/60 I have switched to. I don't know why but it is a fact.

EZ

Incidentally, BOTH Touring and Dyna models are "A" type motors, rubber mounted without seperate oil tanks or counter-balancers.

EZ,

Although the "A" type motors do not have a traditional oil bag under the seat, the "oil pan" you are referring to is separate from the engine, no? That is, the bulk of the oil is in a separate compartment and not the crankcase.

07SG, yes, the pan is beneath the cases and oil is directed into its rear via the return line through a passageway at the front of the transmission into the oil pan. It is then slowed by a baffle to help it cool before being re circulated from the front of the baffle back through another passageway in the transmission and into the lower hose between the transmission and the crankcase. It is a dry sump system and you should run the engine at idle for a couple of minutes to prevent anyfalse readings on the dipstick.
