Default BT Newb Question

Ok, forgive me for being an idiot, but I’m at work and I don’t have my owner’s manual and I’d like to pick this up on my way home from work…. I’m a new Big Twin owner (traded in my Sportster) and I’m not exactly sure what I need to be buying for my 1,000 service? I see that it holds 3 quarts in the engine. Do the ‘09s have a separate hole for transmission? Seems like I picked up somewhere that the new bikes share the transmission and engine oil? I may be wrong.

Anyway, I would appreciate it if somebody could fill me in on what I need for the transmission and primary if they are separate. I’ve been using Mobil 1 VTwin in my Sportster and that’s what I’ll be picking up for the engine in the BT. I’d just like to know if I maybe need to pick up an extra quart for the transmission? I’m sure the Harley guys can tell me what else I need when I get to the dealership as far as filter and primary lube.

You have 3 seperate sumps. Engine, Trans, Primary. Get the 20w50 for the engine (mine takes 2.5 qts on a wet change and 3.0 on a dry change if the engine has been taken apart).

My primary uses 1.0qts and you can use the 20w50 or 10w40 (lots of guys prefer and use 10w40 Vtwin)

My 6 speed trans takes 1.0 qts and I recommend you use the Mobil1 75w90 or 85w140 gear oil versus the 20w50 as it will shift much smoother. (you can run the gear oil 15-20,000 miles or 1 year).

As for the filter I recommend you get a Harley filter that is speced for your engine and has the correct filtration rating (mine is 5 micron).

A second filter choice would be a K&N but it should be the one with an anti-drain back valve. Also get a derby cover gasket in case you need it and 3 o-rings for the drain bolts

You will need a T-27 (not a T-25) torx bit for the derby cover screws. Be certain to mark the top hole of the derby cover with a piece of tape so you can return it to it's original position as the cover sometimes takes on the shape of the case and this will prevent leaks. I have re-used the orange rubber derby gasket 3 times. But have a new one in case. I also use some white permatex hydraulic sealer on the drain plugs. Torque the derby screws 100 INCH lbs in a star pattern. Do not over torque the drain plugs as they strip easily.
