Ok, forgive me for being an idiot, but Im at work and I dont have my owners manual and Id like to pick this up on my way home from work . Im a new Big Twin owner (traded in my Sportster) and Im not exactly sure what I need to be buying for my 1,000 service? I see that it holds 3 quarts in the engine. Do the 09s have a separate hole for transmission? Seems like I picked up somewhere that the new bikes share the transmission and engine oil? I may be wrong.
Anyway, I would appreciate it if somebody could fill me in on what I need for the transmission and primary if they are separate. Ive been using Mobil 1 VTwin in my Sportster and thats what Ill be picking up for the engine in the BT. Id just like to know if I maybe need to pick up an extra quart for the transmission? Im sure the Harley guys can tell me what else I need when I get to the dealership as far as filter and primary lube.
Get 5 quarts total on the oil. 3 for the engine, 1 for the tranny, 1 for the primary. As stated before you will not use all 5 but you need more than 4. Get an oil filter and get a o-ring and primary gasket kit. They are less than $5.
As stated above, plus wrench to get oil filter off(I used a strap). I would also plan on taking primary cover off to get any metal shaving that maybe in there(I found a few slivers in the corners) and anti-sieze, I use these on the screws to put the primary cover back on. And I know this goes against conventional wisdom, but I change the oil with the motor cold, I figure all the sludge is already at the bottom of the engine, why heat it up and recirculate it? Plus with a cold engine there is no mess when removing the oil filter. IF you change it hot, loosen the oil filter before it warms up. Also stand the bike upright for a bit if you change on the jiffy stand you'll get more old oil out.
