Default eagle Need help with oil change

I need help with my first oil change on my 2000 elctra glide.I purchased the sreamin eagle syn 20w-50w oil and oil filter and proceeded to pull a oil plug and drained out very little oil, this plug was on the right had side of bike when sitting on it,so what was that oil for? I pulled a allen type dipstick out, short stick and proceeded to put 20-50 back in it until it was to the full mark.So what plug is for draining motor oil? Also pulled inspection cover off and primary clutch cover off and put in oil until that was up on the clutch spring,is that right? I need help on all this ****,my goldwing wasn't this complicated.Anyone one have a picture of the bottom side of the 88 twin cam and where the oils go,much help would be appreciated. thanks

You need to read a manual. If the drain plug you pulled was an allen, it wasn't a drain plug - it was the sump. If you drained the transmission, it takes about 24 oz. The dipstick you are referencing is the trans. Do yourself a favor and get a service manual - at least get an owners manual.

Sounds like you drained the transmission. The oil drain plug should be on the left front of the pan. Primary should be filled only to the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring with the bike straight up...................BG

Does it shift better? Good job on the tranny...

The primary takes a Qt. I didn't really read that you drained the primary though, only that you removed covers and filled oil to a certain level. Let's assume you drained. Decent job on primary...

Motor oil. Get a manual or go to a shop and ask someone where the drain is. Better to see it because there's drain plugs everywhere. Poor job on motor...

All kidding aside, good luck

Like everyone said.....get a service manual, it makes most of us better mechanics than we really are.

There are better oils out there than Syn3, what you decide on is your choice.

Good luck

You definitely need a factory service manual. Don't do anything else because it appears you are headed down the wrong road.

I'm not familiar with the 2000 model, but on my 93 'glide the engine oil plug faces forward, while the tranny oil faces down. Both are located under the transmission because that's where HD put the engine oil 'pan'. the engine oil dipstick just pulls out. The allen head dipstick unscrews and is for the tranny. You put motor oil in there by mistake. You need tranny oil. Also on my 93 you check the tranny level when the bike is upright (vertical), but the engine oil when it's on the side stand. And on my 93 when you drain the primary, you refill it while the bike is upright adding enough oil to just reach slightly above where the bottom of the clutch pack is. You need to remove the 'derby' cover to add the primary oil and get the level correct. There should be a good pic in your owners manual of this. It really isn't that tough to do, just plan on washing the scoot afterwards. Until you get really good at it.

I know this will start a huge argument, but I only run syn oils in the tranny and primary. I've always run the dino stuff in my motor and changed it every 2000-2500 miles. The shop that just did my top end says to run dino for the first 1000 miles (that's two oil changes: 100 and 500 miles) then they recommend a switch to syn. If I don't sell her before then I might try Mobil 1 Vtwin.

There are lots of arguments for either syn or dino oil in the motor...you make the decision.

Okay, okay! I need the manual! Heres what I did,I drained the tranny by mistake,I figured that out after not a whole lot of oil came out.I figured out that the plug on top with allen wrench fitting was for tranny and proceeded to fill tranny back up to full mark with 20w-50w screamin eagle syn oil. I then pulled off inspection cover and primary cover and thought that the oil was low by what owners manual said so I filled up with the same oil in primary hole up to clutch pack. Motor oil I have not did yet waiting for manual. It don't need changed yet,but beings this is a new bike to me,even though they just did all oils before I purchased this bike,it still makes me feel easier knowing for sure! Know what I mean? Anyways its been a great bike,I sold my goldwing a bought this bike and its been fun so far. This bike is 2000 and had only 7800 miles on it.I gave $14,400 for it and sold my wing for $4000,figure i did good on it,about $2000 in chrome goodies on it plus I figure another $300 for a K&N air filter this guy put on. What do you think? Anyways back to the oil change, will do when I get back from rally and have a book.I had one for my wing also.Anyways thanks everyone for the help and the ribbing!

The primary only goes to the clutch spring outer diameter. You really need to look down inside to see it with a light. Oh yeah, I read the entire post word for word, and thought that since no one suggested it, purchasing a manual might be a good idea.
