My own feelings on the dealer recommending the syn 3 boils down to $$$$. They want you to use it because the price is near $9 as opposed to the $3-$4 a quart. This means more profit and eventually more work when the problems arise with the trans. Kind of makes sense to me.
Here are a couple of posts from a HD tech that I know about the syn 3 in the trans from another site, FWIW
1. Just had a 02 RK in today... leaking inner primary seal..( Nothing unusuall ) ...took it apart and found the Main shaft toast... Main drive gear inner needle bearing was junk......... Not a lot of miles on the bike... BUT It has always had SYN 3 in the tranny.....
2. Thats rite... had a customer bring in a 03 RG ... tranny noisy in all but 5th gear ...sounds like the main shaft bearings on its way OUT.... Ill keep yas posted as I get it apart and see whats UP.... Oh yaaaaa... first thing I asked him was..... are you running HD tranny oil..... ??? His answer...............
No im using SYN3 ..have been since Day ONE.........
3. As a matter of fact..the MOCO is being very generous in this situation....considering that it is a 02 and out of warranty ...I have no complaints reguarding the MOCO ...just the use of a 20/50 in a tranny.............
