First time Harley owner Question
I'm going to change my own oil Problem is I'm not sure where the drain plug are I have a 1997 EG 1340. all I've ever owned before were Metrics[&o] so if anyone could post some pics from a manuel I'd appritiate it. Yea I'm going to get a manuel nest trip to he stealer/ just he's 70 mile away
Thanks in advance John
Don't have a picture handy but the one pointing foward underneath the bike in the oil pan is the engine oil, the other pointing down is the trans. They are pretty close to each other.
If you are in doubt, loosen the plug a bit and notice the color of the oil drip on the plug. Engine oil will no doubt be dirty and black in color, Trans oil usually comes out fairly clean ( clear) if it HD oil. I say this because other brands are different colors such as red and a few bluish green colors, but they should be clear usually , not black.

Can the syn 3 , the reason I say this is that it is not a true synthetic even though the cost of it is. I have the SE deuce which comes with syn 3 in all three holes. The first thing I did when I got it home is to change the trans to redline shockproof heavy, Mobil 1 V Twin in the engine and HD primary oil in the primary ( less than half the cost of syn 3 ) and it has been around for ions and worked well. The primary doesn't need syn 3 or anything fancy, the HD primary oil works just fine. The Mobil 1 V Twin even sounded better in the motor than the syn 3 and seems to run smoother to me also.
The reason I say redline in the trans is that there have been trans failures starting to pop up with the syn 3 in them. It's a MOTOR oil not a gear lube and I think in time that this syn 3 in the trans is going to come back and bite HD in the butt in th form of failures.
One other thing to consider is that your speed sensor on the trans will sooner or later ( Probably sooner) go bad from the metal filings that will collect on it 's magnetic pickup with the syn 3 . With the redline in the trans, when you service the trans there is virtually no shavings on the drain magnet, which tells me that lubrication is far better with the redline.JMHO
That's my story and I'm gonna stick to it!
I do think it's overpriced and I'll be switching to mobil 1.
