Question Stroker Panhead new cylinders question

A friend of mine has a 1956 Panhead stroked out to 80. It has an 80in Flywheel, 80in pistons and 74in cylinders bored out to 80in. The cylinders and pistons are brand new replacements.

I told him that putting new parts, especially cylinders on an old engine would still require him to do a break in period, but he says that's not true. So what would happen if you took that engine and did interstate travel at 70mph without doing the break in?

Even though you have an old motor, you still have a new top end. Rings need to seat properly. I ran mine probably 100 miles no faster than maybe 50 in 4th. Then change oil and filter, if you have one.

+1 on what 57PANHD said. New top end still uses older technology. Tolerances are un different than the newer iron.

Sure you can run it at 70 w/o a break in period. Suppose you can get lucky and nothing takes a dump on you, but if you are not so fortunate and the top in doesn't settle in properly, you will be at the bench with the motor torn down in short order.

Think it it is just good sense on older technology to stay withe the book on breaking in new motors. Get a lot more life out of an engine that way.
