I'm trying to replace a starter on a 2003 Wide Glide. I have the battery and battery box off the bike and the 2 allen bolts that mount the starter are out. The battery cable connections are off the starter as well. Should this thing just slide out of the engine case from the right hand side? It's hung-up and it feels like whatever it's hung on is spring loaded. Do I need to pop the left side case cover off to remove the starter is it just bound up on the flywheel? Is pulling on the starter to free it or dislodge it a bad thing? How the hell does this come off the bike?
Harveydean is correct you will need to remove the left side (primary inner & outer to get to the starter jack shaft) not to hard of a task just time consuming. Have fun! Nothing better then learning what our bikes are made of.
Does that info(having to remove the primary) also go for a 97 flht? If so is there Oil in the primary? This is my third Harley but the first i've had to wrench on.
you only need to remove the outer primary, and yes that goes for both bikes, you need only undo the bolt in the jackshaft, and the starter will come out, just don't loose the coupler in between the two. on the wide glide it will be a 5/16 hex head with a lock tab you'll need to bend out of the way.
there are no oil lines to the primary, but you will need to drain the fluid, and replace the gasket.you refill it through the inspection cover, put in 1 quart and you're good.
Thanks for the Info! I will hopefully get the starter off tomorrow(before it gets too hot) and find out what's wrong with it. I bought the bike a bit over a month ago, and the aftermarket starter that was on the bike is making some horrid noises.
I have a starter problem also, I got a 1984 evo engine on a rigid frame w/ a 4 speed kick start tranny.
I loosen the oil bag and set to one side removed outer primary removed starter the gear teeth were woren down guess starter was grinding. should i replace any other parts while its open or can i just slap another starter in. please help
