What can I say. We leave for Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee tomorrow. We will pull out of Wilmette between 9 and 10, straight thru Chicago on 94 to the Skyway, then the Indiana tollway to 65. Should take about an hour, we do it all the time. Rush hour would definitely add and hour. But going out to 294, etc would add 45 minutes or more even outside of rush hour.

If I was in Wilmette, I would take the Skyway too. But he isn't going to Wilmette. If doesn't add 45 minutes to go to Milwaukee by 294.
Like my Google Map says sometimes it's faster. And it's always in a better neighborhood.
The Tri-State (I-294) does have a 55 mph speed limit. I normally go about 70 mph which works well for me. True there are some who will fly by you but they are normally in the far left lane. There are some who are going slower than me that I will pass. Cops normally aren't a concern at 70 and I'm not a lane weaver. We normally make an Oasis stop on the Tri-State for a pit stop and a bite to eat. Occasionally we take the Skyway but the Tri-State is normally more predictable for us. Traveling from Wisconsin to Indiana, Chicago is our route of choice.
I think the real question here is what are your routes to and from Dayton? The mind boggles at all the squiggly lines between you and Dayton. I'm jealous already.
Oh....and on the topic - do as others have suggested and just take 294 coming and going. The biggest concern is whether or not you're keeping up with all the people doing 90 MPH in a 55 zone. EZ/I Pass is a must. Half the cost and 10x the efficiency.
The Skyway blows and the JB/Circle interchange has been a nightmare 24/7. I commute to the south side every Thursday. Trust me on this info.
Travel Tip - Gas up well before Gary. Chicago area gas is expensive. It drops once you get into WI (But not enough!). If you must gas up, do so at one of the Oasises. Ez on and off. Most importantly - safe.
Food - There's a Chicago favorite called Portillo's (burgers, Italian Beef, etc) that is east off 294 at Dempster. Maybe a mile? It's an easy exit and good food. Getting back on is a little weird because you have to work north to Golf road (no northbound ramp on Dempster). Do a little recon with Google maps. It's easy to get back on and you'll be to the museum in 1:15 tops.
Have a safe ride. Look Cheryl and I up at Bike Night. we'll be there.
I appreciate the info. Going to come up 65 but on way back going to find some side roads lol. Will have to check out Portillo's. Will be there thurs night for sure, orange 13 cvo road glide va tags lol...
You could always take a route north to Muskegon, MI and take the high speed ferry across the lake (2.5 hrs), right into Milwaukee, its not cheap but it is an experience. I believe its $86 for the bike return + $149 per person return. Nice ride up the coast of Lake MI to boot.
We were there but so many people and bikes. I did look for a cvo RG. Guessing it's one much like a buddies - orange/grey stripes, black motor, etc. Nice bikes. But I didn't see one.
Regardless, hope you made it there safe and had a great time. It was a decent turnout.
