This year, I am planning to ride out to Sturgis from Ohio (between Columbus and Dayton, slightly north). Has anyone done this trip and could suggest places to stop/ride/stay/avoid on the way? What would be a good route? I would like to avoid Chicago (and Gary). Suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
I'm from eastern Ohio and have ridden out 3 times. Stayed at Park Lake campground in a cabin with a laundromat and Steakhouse close by. Take Route 70 to Indianapolis and get route 74. Take 74 to route 80 into Sioux City Iowa and take rt. 29 north to Sioux Falls South Dakota where you take route 90 all the way in. It's the fastest way there.
I live in eastern Ohio and have ridden out 3 times. Once for the rally, the other times in late June. For the rally I stayed at a cabin at Lake Park Campground, Laundromat and Steakhouse close by. I take Rt. 70 to Indianapolis and get on Rt. 74. Take this up to Rt. 80 to Sioux City Iowa and get on Rt. 29 north. When you get to Sioux Falls take Rt. 90 all the way in. Stop at Wall Drug and ride through the Badlands, it's worth it. This is the fastest way out. but not a lot to see besides cornfields.

I live just north of Chicago...the second part of the route is what i do to get to Sturgis....trying to take advantage to see some of the country rather then just highway...
avoid chicago, we've been thru there many times & it ain't good!!! came from NJ all the way to Spearfish, Redlodge Mt. Cody Wyo, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, back to Spearfish then home to NJ, 6000 mi in 14 days, 2 up towing a Bushtec, 8 riders, temps where 105* + & no relief!!
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. The 70-74-80-29-90 might be what we take out. Maybe south through the Black Hills on the way back. Any inputs on good towns to stay in on the way out? Probably looking to do 4-500 miles a day. A few friends have stayed out there and so we have an idea of where we want to stay once in Sturgis.
I must live close to you (Marysville) and went out last summer. I listened to my GPS and went through Chicago... never again. As mentioned not much in between there and Sturgis. Plenty of things on ride ideas on here in the area. On my way back we went to the corn palace, a interesting stop but I would not go out if your way to see it.
One thing you can be sure of .... IF you happen to go through Chicago, you will NEVER, EVER make the same mistake again. Stay south of Chicago. Did your hear me? I SAID "STAY SOUTH OF CHICAGO"
