Leaving Pennsylvania on June 27th for Yellowstone. Routing through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Back through Nebraska. Curious about what kind of weather to expect in South Dakota and Montana and also what sights shouldnot be missed. Have almost the entire month of July. Heres the list now: Sturgis, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Little Big Horn, Devils Tower, and Yellowstone.
Also can't make reservations for Yellowstone lodging until I'm close because there is no schedule and I don't want one. Will motels near Yellowstone be a big problem?
Thanks for any info.
For your Black Hills portion of the trip check with Harney Peak Motel in Hill City SD. These are good people who ride, it is not fancy but it is a great location. http://www.hillcitysd.com/harneyhome.html
Motels near Yellowstone could be a problem. Depends on how close you want to be. Cody is the biggest town to the east. I think it is about an hour to the park gate from there, could be less. A really cool place to stay is in Silver Gate. 1 mile outside the north park entrance. There is a little place called the Grizzly Lodge, I loved it. There is a little bigger town just north of it that has a few motel also. This would be the route you would take to ride the Beartooth. Other side of the highway is Red Lodge, MT. Cool place. You could also stay in the park at either the Old Faithful Inn or up near Mammoth Hot Springs.
There's not much to see in Sturgis this time of year, IMHO. But check out Deadwood, Nice town. Fatboy is right, Hillcity is a great location. Its right in the middle of everything. Try to do needles Hgwy. Badlands, And Spearfish canyon.. I have never been up there for the rally. But went last year in June and had all the roads to ourselves.
Another great place to stay in the Black Hills area is The Canyon Gateway Motel in Spearfish SD off I90 at the head of Spearfish Canyon. Great Scenery , 10 min from Deadwood. Cozy and clean.
