Trip Information
Also can't make reservations for Yellowstone lodging until I'm close because there is no schedule and I don't want one. Will motels near Yellowstone be a big problem?
Thanks for any info.

In S. Dakota, when you do IronMountain road (Peter Norbeck Scenic Highway), make sure you ride it from south to north as the pigtail turns will frame up Mt Rushmore in the underpasses. Don't miss Needles Highway, Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon.

Leaving Pennsylvania on June 27th for Yellowstone. Routing through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Back through Nebraska. Curious about what kind of weather to expect in South Dakota and Montana and also what sights shouldnot be missed. Have almost the entire month of July. Heres the list now: Sturgis, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Little Big Horn, Devils Tower, and Yellowstone.

Regarding weather - you really need to be prepared for anything. Although you probably won't encounter extreme cold, the mountains around Yellowstone can be quite nippy, especially early morning and late evening. Last year, riding to Sturgis, temps were in the high 80's to mid 90's and I hit one huge thunderstorm crossing Ohio. Even with the high temps, I wore long sleves to minimize sun exposure. In and around Yellowstone should be very comfortable riding with 70's to 80's temperature range.
Once west of Chicago, you will notice the temperature drop as the sun sets. The flat-lands actually feel cold in the evening, especially if daytime temperature is high. My last leg to Sturgis, I rode from southern Wisc to Lead (894 miles) and when the sun went down in South Dakota, I stopped to add a layer and still was a cold ride into Lead.
One thing to consider - while you are riding, the wind will keep you cool - just keep in mind it's from sweat evaporation and you can dehydrate quickly. Drink lots of water!
I hope this helps some. I know you'll enjoy the trip. There is a lot to see and the view going south out of Yellowstone and into Jackson Hole WY is breathtaking and one of my very favorites. Ride safely - remember that they (cagers) ARE out to get you.
