I rode the same route into Pierre, SD a couple years back. Riding along the Missouri River has great scenery. Stopped in to visit Petersen's too. Keep the updates coming! Reliving my road trip through the Midwest through your trip.
My favorite motorcycle trips were all done with no planning other than a general direction. Make it up as you go along. Enjoy.
That's the main reason I like solo trips. You don't have to plan, you don't have to find a hotel with 4 available rooms. No one gets mad when you're not "on schedule" or "on route"
I travel solo a lot. And visit friends along the way (hey, free room) :-)
We left Spearfish this morning, via I-90. I needed to save a bit of time, 14 took us that way anyway, and 80 on the interstate with light traffic is a lot fun. All in all we did about an hour and 10 minutes of interstate today.
We stopped at the HD dealership in Gillette.
We got rained on going over the mountain pass, but saw a moose before that happened. We never put our rain gear on. I figured we'd ride out of it soon enough. About 10-15 minutes later it was sunny again.
Once down the mountain things heated up again. It was 73 while it was raining, but it was 96 on the prairie or desert...which ever you prefer to call it.
I did find an A&W, which made things better.
From Graybull we went up to Lovell, to avoid road work (according to Google maps) and what looked like a good sized rain storm. We were successful on both counts.
Once in Cody it was time to check in, shower, and head downtown to the HD store, a lame *** gunfight at the Irma Hotel, walk around a bit, then head back to the hotel as a storm was a brewing.
I covered the bike grabbed our rain jackets, just in case, and we walked the 4 blocks to the Irma for dinner.
After dinner we walked back to the hotel, grabbed our laundry, walked a block to the laundromat and, well you can figure that out.
After that I had enough time to post this.
Now some pics. Headed out. Gillette HD. The moose. The rain. The views. The treats. The lame *** gunfight. The Irma. The food. The miles.
There are many more pics, which will all be shared once I'm home.
Thanks Pard...It's 10 yrs since I've been out in that part of the country. If it makes any sense at all...I'm enjoying my own memories through your pictures.
Appreciate the time you're taking to post up your stops.
Jeff... have fun up on The Beartooth. Right across from the Irma is a great bagel shop for breakfast and the Museum is pretty good if your staying another night..... was the frisbee dog out in front of The Irma?

I've heard that a lot. I guess I've been lucky with the people I've ridden with. No drama, no BS. Quite lucky to hear some people tell it. I've done a lot of solo trips too. Like riding either way.
OP: Fantastic trip and fantastic thread. Thanks very much. Looking forward to more.
Great day on the Chief Joseph Hwy and the Beartooth Hwy. Rode each of them, both ways. We got a couple of showers, but nothing real bad. When it looked like all hell was going to break loose we suited up, helmets and all....it fizzles out, figures.
I swear it felt like 30 degrees at one point. The wife was bundled up like crazy. We had our rain pants on just for warmth.
Lunch was in Redlodge. Then back to Cody, via Beartooth and Chief Joseph.
We headed out to the Buffalo Bill dam before dinner. Three pretty cool tunnels on the way there.
Dinner was at the Silver Dollar Saloon. I had a really good burger.
After all that it was time to pack up for the for the ride home, which ever way that may be.
My connection sucks, so this is the best I can do tonight.
