Default Rt. 66

Anyone do this from Chicago to L.A. Doing a cross country road trip this year and I’m looking to take my time, Rt. 66 is one option or just staying north and head into Washington, I’ve already been through the desert states but wouldn’t mind doing them again just to do Rt. 66 from start to finish, I just wanna be sure if it’s worth it.

Well 66 is broken apart it's not a straight through ride having been replaced by interstate freeways.
It's nice through Arizona and California but that's all I've ridden of it.
Here's a guide site: https://national66.org/

My cousin, Jerry McClanahan, wrote a guide for traveling that trip, EZ66 Guide for Travelers. There is so much more than just road to Route 66.
Get a copy of the book and then decide if that is the trip that you want to take. Book is cheap enough and the information is very thorough.

A few of us are considering doing this mid May then up from LA to Oregon and then East back to Ontario. Giving ourselves 3 weeks to run it. We are mostly riders and don't stop often to enjoy the attractions, we do that when our wives join us.

I've done huge chunks of it, but it's not continuous.

Weather will dictate the best time to do it. I did alot of it in early September and it was miserable, but the return trip in late September early October was OK.

I bought Jerry McClanahan's book above in Oklahoma on the return trip in a museum somewhere. I'd recommend it, and I'd also recommend doing it before you leave. I'd also suggest putting it in a clear baggie to keep it from getting torn up. The wire binding is terrific for flipping through, but i kept pulling it out of the saddlebags and then shoving it back in.

I wish I'd taken more time and pictured. I may go again in early October.

If you're a Democrat I'd recommend doing the southern part in July or August, and the eastern and northern parts in January.

Bring an extra bag of insults as well. People in Oklahoma love when these type folks stop in for coffee and tales.

These threads are an excellent read. Lots to see, be prepared for stopping a lot and moderate speed limits. But well worth it for sure. So much to see. I did it in September, got some heavy rain near Petrified Forest and cold in Flagstaff, besides that lovely weather. The dessert is hot, as expected.
