Riding out for the first time also. Coming from the Seattle area. I am planning on camping at the Buffalo Chip. Does anybody know if they will receive shipments there?
People are starting to stay further away from sturgis and just riding in for the day and say they have been there. Its getting to be to much of a hassle. I would rather just stop and go in for a couple hours and leave and ride further west into the mountains. The Black Hills are a great place to ride. Enjoy it for your first time. Beautiful area
Binford6100 you're about as many miles from Sturgis as we are, just under 1K. I live near Gurnee IL. I planned my trip to hit slightly more miles on the first day (just under 600), spending the night in Mitchell S.D., and then only having just under 400 miles on the second day. I can't remember where we're staying in Mitchell right now, but it's one of the "box chains', and it's costing us about 80.00 for the room, but they've got the continental breakfast, pool and hot tub which I'm sure I'm going to be using that evening.
I live just north of Milwaukee about 45 mins and am heading out with these guys (Binford6100 and crew)from Milwaukee. We're all staying the night in Mitchell also. You're about the same distance away from Milwaukee, but south.
I say get on your bike and go. Buy what you need at big box store. Use it trash it. Buy souvenir clothing and mail it home. Ride with what's on your back. Have fun.
These people talking about the city park don't know what you are talking about. 1982 was the last year of the city park camping and 82 was the year the outhouses got burned down. It caused so much trouble that the citizens started a petition drive to shut down Sturgis, it was put to a vote of the people in Sturgis whether to allow the rally to continue and the vote was close but keeping it going won and we are still there.

Dude,
I was there. It was in 81. Still have the sticker on an old craftsman toolbox. They never emptied out the shithouses all week. They where charging top dollar to camp but by thursday the wooden outhouses were full. People got drunk and pissed and then you know what happens next. You can take your granpa sutff and stick it as well. I'm still ridin' all year long.
I turned fifty this year and have put this trip off for way too many years, Im going! I will be riding out of Oxnard C.A thru Vegas and hookin up with my good buddy at Idaho Falls. Thats 200 miles out of my way but he is riding out of Bend Oregon and I want to ride thru Yellowstone anyway. 1650 miles one way according to mapquest. I will be sportin the Dyna Wide Glide with no windshield. Just like you see in the pic, Weeeeeeee!
It's a easy 6 hour ride for me so I just throw on a tent, sleeping bag and and the clothes on my back and away I go. No reservations, no plan, just point it that direction and go, which for me is part of the adventure. Have fun, it's a hoot no matter how you do it.
