Default Route 66 this May

The wife and I are thinking about a road trip this May from Tennessee and taking Route 66 from Tulsa, OK to Flagstaff, AZ. From Flagstaff we will be going to Grand Canyon and then back to Tennessee.

If time and money works out would like to go to Yellowstone national Park, Sturgis, SD ( also see Mt. Rushmore and Devil’s Tower). From there we will go into Nebraska and down the Gold Rush Byway thru Colorado to Kansas Then from Kansas home.

We are talking 2 weeks to do this so I'm not sure how far we will get and this might be a little ambitious . Any suggestions on good maps or guides, things to see, places to eat and inexpensive lodging?

Thanks in advance.

if you're going to mount rushmore, make the time to see crazyhorse and do iron mountain road - you won't be sorry.
if you want some good hot chile, home-cooked new mexican food in albuquerque try: el patio, little anita's, garcia's kitchen.

Route 66 between Tulsa and OKC, and between Tulsa and Missouri, is littered with small towns and good food. Check out Route 66 http://www.route66h-d.com/ and Myers-Duren Harley Davidson http://www.myersduren.com/ in Tulsa. MD has a lot of history behind it. Not only the oldest in Tulsa (and maybe Oklahoma) but one of the oldest in the country. They have a lot of old bikes there. If you've never been, in OKC check out the National Monument to the bombing.

When you get to Amarillo, there is a canyon SW about 23 miles. Well worth the ride. It's the second largest canyon in the U.S. Palo Duro Canyon. http://palodurocanyon.com/
And don't forget the Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo. Great steaks.

West of OKC, you might as well take I-40. Route 66 is broken into pieces from there on out, at least to Albuquerque. If you have time while in Albuquerque, the Sandia Peak Tramway (just northeast) offers great views. http://www.sandiapeak.com/index.php?page=tramway

Thanks everyone.

I think taking Route 66 from OK to Flagstaff, AZ and then to the Grand Canyon and back home is all the time and money we can do.

Looks like there is a lot to see and do. Any help on recommendation on good inexpensive lodging would help.

don't miss the section of RT66 between Seligman AZ to Oatman AZ it's one of the best parts left. Stay at the Bright Angel Lodge at the GC if you can it's right on the edge of the GC. Then you can catch sunset/sunrise when the canyon is at it's best..

Thanks flhxkiller.

Bright Angel Lodge sounds good but when I checked it on-line, it's booked in the month of May.

Don't forget to stop and have your picture taken on the corner of Winslow Az.. there is a statue and wall mural in the middle of town.. take any exit and head down town. Rt. 66 is the main street.. a couple of resturants and a good coffee/pastrie shop there..
