Looking for a nice ride from deadwood to red lodge.Going to be in deadwood july 2nd. we are thinking, 212 to billings and then down to Red Lodge? stay the night at Yodeler Motel and over to west yellowstone for 3 day stay.. also, hows road construction in yellowstone and also ive heard theres some on beartooth pass. any info would be GREATLY appreciated.
Its a beautiful trip. I would take I-90 to Gillete and than 2 lane road to Sheridan. Ride over the Big Horn Mountains and over to Lovell. Go north and than over west to Red Lodge. That was a great scenic ride
US 212 is the quickest way, for sure. You'll shave off an hour between the Black Hills and Billings. And you'll ride through some great high plains country.
If you want to explore Wyoming a bit, take I-90 to Buffalo and then US 16 over the Bighorns and on to Cody. From Cody, you have a few options: work up to Red Lodge through Belfry or go up the Chief Joseph Hwy to the Beartooth Pass.
There is construction on the pass. Your stimulus dollars at work. Delays of no more then 10 minutes. At least the view is nice.
As far as I know, the only major construction in the Park is at the bridge by Gibbon Falls (between Madison Jct and Norris).
Prepare yourself for West Yellowstone. It's a tourist trap.
+1 On the Route. We went that way last year from Sturgis/Keystone to Red Lodge.. Big Horn Rt. 14 is awesome!!!! Great Route. This is the route we followed.
We had planned to go Beartooth into Yellowstone, but unfortunately we were weathered out, plus construction on Beartooth, and too late getting to Red Lodge to try and make the lodge in Yellowstone that evening. So an unplanned evening in Red Lodge, but made the most of it and next day ventured down to Cody, Wyoming and in the east entrance to the Park. Gives us a reason to go back..
Thanks! seeing we want to spend soemtime or anyways part of the day in Red Lodge, we'll probley take 212.. wasnt sure if there was another road that goes directly to red lodge that would be scenic BUT yet get to red Lodge early in the afternoon..

US 212 is scenic.
When you leave Belle Fourche you'll be hitting the wide open high plains. Just marvel at the openness and remoteness of it all. You've got nothing like it in Wisconsin. I love that ride. Gas up in Belle Fourche (****. bell foosh).
Also, US 212 hits I-90 right at the Little Bighorn. Spend a half hour or so and check it out.
Once you get near Billings, I-90/212 skirts the southern edge of the city, not the best. 10 more miles to Laurel. Then 212 splits off and heads south to Red Lodge.
