Default Trip Advice

Hi All: Have been reading all posts on this forum over the last year. Just recieved delivery of an 08 Ultra a month ago. Very much enjoying it. Leaving end of June from Winnipeg Canada to the Black Hills & then over to Yellowstone. Have been to The Black Hills but not to Yellowstone. Does anyone have any information for me on travelling thru Yellowstone. How are the roads? How long to travel thru the park? Any help would be appreciated.

Yellowstone roads have always been good to me, now the traffic in summer, that's another story. It does get crowded and congested. How long to travel through the park? Well, you can easily make the circle in one day or four weeks, how much stuff do you want to see? If you get a chance, though, I recommend going out the south gate, through the Tetons and down into Jackson, excellent scenery, cool little town.

Yellowstone will be great but will get crowded in a few eeks when school lets out. If you can, come in from Red Lodge. You'll ride through Bear Tooth to the NE entrance. Or you could book a campground or motel in West Yellowstone. Take a day ride out the NE entrance through Bear Tooth to Red Lodge, have lunch the ride south towards Cody and turn right on Chief Joseph Highway to return to the NE Entrance. It's a wonderful ride and going to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons is also great.

Hope this is helpful!

Bob

From the Black Hills, head west through Gillette, through the Big Horn Mtns to Cody. That is a beautiful and fun ride. From Cody, you can head due west into Yellowstone, or head north and loop through Red Lodge, Bear Tooth Pass, Chief Joseph hwy and then into Yellowstone. Both are great options. As far as Yellowstone, I rode through on the way to Sturgis last year. I spent the night in Jackson. The next morningwent north into the park, saw the lakes, watched Old Faithful erupt, saw the "little Grand Canyon," rodeby the steaming, boiling mud pots, ate lunch, sat out a rogue thunderstorm, rode out to the west into Cody. You can see a lot of the park in a day. Depends on how much you like to stop, take photos, walk around, etc. Surprisingly, traffic was not bad at all in the park.

Last year on our way to Sturgis, we stayed 3 nights in Yellowstone.

You really need to take Bear Tooth Pass (Red Lodge, MT) into (or out of) the park. We got up earlyish everyday to tour the park (wanted to miss the crush of tourist that start their driving tours late morning) ...

Saw lots and lots of Buffalo, elk, deer and a couple of bears (w/cubs) ...

Loved it, we saw everything ... could have done it just spending two nights, but we found plenty to do.

P.S. on our way to Milwaukee this year, we are going thru Yellowstone just so we can take the Bear Tooth Pass again!

Hey Beresford, I just wanted to say "hi". It's good to see fellow Manitobans on the list. Good luck on your run to Yellowstone!

Was in yellowstone last July and motel was not a problem in West Yellowstone. If you really want to see the park without any parking and traffic hassle there are many bus tours available.
