Take 580 to 120 and go east to 99 north. Take the 4 exit towards Angels Camp. Stay on 4 all the way to Markleville. You will not be sorry. This road hands down is one of the best I have ever been on. After Markleville, 4 dead ends at 88. You can either make a right and go to 395 into Carson City and then on to Reno or take a left and take 50 around Lake Tahoe to 395 through Carson City and on into Reno. I prefer the Tahoe route.

This sounds like something that I would do on my way home with my son. Thanks!
The 4 connects to the 89 east. That portion of the 89 was some of the most spectacular scenery I remember from my travels through the sierras. But you have to do it going east to get the views. You'll be about a mile up looking down into the 395 valley as you go down. Very nice memories.
