guys who are blasting through take I-15 up to SLC then I 80 east to Cheyenne, then up to Sturgis on WY route 85.
Lots of So Cal riders go this way.
if you have time there are lots of 2 lane routes through Northern AZ or Utah into Colorado then up into Wyoming.
So it depends on how much time you have, what kind of time you want to make on the road
I did 3 easy days from PHX, fantastic experience...camped at KOAS on the way up.
If you are hoteling, Best Westerns have deals with HOG.
Staying in the Sturgis area is tough, even the Rapid City Holiday Inn express can be over $300 a night! ( luckily I have a Pal with a place in Central City.)

Three years ago, I stayed in Gillette,WY at the Holiday Inn Express. Forget the rate, but the location was pretty good.....when you head into Stugis from Gillette, make sure you go see Devil's Tower.....then Sturgis...then south to Deadwood (that's where I'm staying this year....but I'm paying $250/night and I'm sharing a room). Make sure you go to Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument. Also...like a LOT of rides, there are photographers that will take your picture....make sure you remember the web site so you can get your pictures....
Have fun.....my experience as far as the "longest lines" were:
1. Bathroom
2. ATM machine
3. GAS STATION.....we made the mistake of waiting until we got to Sturgis to fill up and it took forever.
If you don't ride over Bear Tooth Pass into Redlodge, MT, you will miss the ride of a life time! I'm serious, it's my favorite route out of anywhere I've ever been, east or west!!
