The reason H-D has the claim with it not working in the 09 models is the back lighting ...The new 09 models have a new look of LED back lighting on the 09 and newer guages and the -05a still incorporates the older incandesant bulbs and the back lighting doesn't match like we would expect...
The guage will still replace the air temp guage without no problem what so ever but the lighting will not match is all...
take the time if you install the oil temp guage to run the lines to the oil pan for a much cleaner look...

Purchase the oil temp gauge and kit probe from someone like drag specialties or JP Cycles and just have Harley or a good motorcycle shop install it. They have a gauge that matches the Ultra SE instrument panel.

To get an accurate oil temp reading the temp probe needs to be mounted in the oil pan. There is an existing fitting in the front portion of the oil pan that can be used for the probe, you will need a bushing to adapt the oil sending probe to the pan, or purchase the proper sending unit.

The way Harley does it will not provide an oil temp reading until the the thermostat in the cooler opens, and you get no reading until then. Bad way to do it. Because of the oil cooler arrangement and the way it is plumbed it won't work on some bikes. This is all Harley has to offer, so they say you can not do it.

Be forewarned normal oil temps on the newer bikes run around 230-260 degrees on a hot day. That's why most guys run a 20W50 synthetic motorcycle oil

Hope this helps.

THANKS GUYS!
I think What I will do is do it my self using the above information and put it in the pan. One of the reasons I bought this Scoot was to give myself projects in the winter. Thanks for your help and support! ~~ Yale

I just did this with a black face gauge (75265-04A). Had to make a little adapter harness at the gauge because the new ('09)bike has push on terminals and the oil temp gauge has ring terminal type connections. Did not want to cut bike's harness.

The sensor down at the oil pan required the purchase of a brass adapter, sensor was smaller than hole in pan. I think sensor was 1/8"NPT and pan was 1/4"NPT??

As far as lighting goes: ALL my small gauges are type 194 incadescent bulbs w/ yellow condoms on them (including the oil temp). Have since changed to all LED's

The bezel of the gauge is of a different design so it shines the light differently & procludes the use of chrome rings. (Thank you Harley designers)

Had the same problem with the mounting bracket not quite fitting the fairing/ gauge properly.

Put one in my SERG. The only difference is the light, it doesnt shine through the numbers but shines around the perimeter of the face.
Be sure and dont tighten it too tight in the fairing, the glass will go far. Dont ask how I know that.
