Default Tuner, Exhaust, Help.

Ok, this is probabaly gonna be long so bear with me please. My wife has a
'12 CVO Street Glide, she had it at the dealer today to get new tires on it and got to talking to the service guy about putting a tuner and new head pipe (with out converter) and new mufflers on to reduce some of the heat the beast puts off. One of her concerns is if she decides to trade it in the next year or so, she would be out of all the money she put into it. I said pull the stuff off before you trade, she said the service guy told her once it is installed it "marries" it self to the bike and she would have to buy another one for her next bike. I really don't know anything about these tuners but this seems like a load of crap to me. Can't you take all the stuff back off and convert it back to stock? Can a guy do this stuff himself? I'm not worried about the exhaust part of it I have done that stuff before but I know nothing about tuners, do you have to have it dyno'd or does it come with maps installed? Like I said I really have no experince with a tuner but I'm not afraid to try. Any help would be great. I guess if anybody has any expiernce with this did it cool the bike down at all? it gets pretty hot on her legs.

you can cut out the catalytic converter(many articles here on this forum--do a search for gut the cat) and add some xieds(plugs into O2 sensors and tells the bike it is running too lean and adds a little gas to air/fuel ratio). no need to buy a tuner or new exhaust system to get rid of a lot of heat on the rider's leg. these modifications should cost you a couple of hundred bucks and make a world of difference for your wife.

These bikes do need to have the cat removed and benefit from using a tuner. Most of the tuners do marry themselves to the bike. You can restore the bike back to stock and even keep the tuner but most vendors require a fee to un-marry the tuner from the original bike to use on another.

I have used the Power Commander, Power Vision, TTS and SE HD tuners. You can tune the bike yourself with many of these. I really like the DynoJet Power Vision. However, if you want someone to tune the bike go with the tuner they use. I have the Vance & Hines Power Duals header on my bike, to eliminate the cat and use Klockwerks slipons. Removing the cat and using a tuner does decrease the heat and provides better performance.

Take a look at the tuning section of the forum for more information than you would ever want to see...

Thanks for all the info guys, Theres so much info out there on tuners and such it gets kind of mind numbing to read it all. I really don't want to be messing around with settings and such, I kinda want a plug and play type of deal, would rather spend my time riding than tuning, don't mind doing some of the work myself, like putting all the stuff on or gutting the cat, just don't have enough computer savy to be messing with air fuel mixtures and such, will have to look more into the xied's.
Thanks again for the input

I'm very happy with:

> Cobra PowerPort Duals
> Cobra Fi2000 Tuner (both plug & play and can be used again on a new bike since it does not marry itself to the ECM).
> Rinehart 4" slip-ons

95hp/199tq runs great everywhere all gears all rpm's.

Dennis Kirk has the best prices on Cobra, Eastern Performance for the Rineharts.

Good luck with your decision, lots of choices and opinions out there on this topic, all are good some are better.

you can probably find a pipe with the converter cut out on e-bay or craigslist for under $150...people pick-up take offs from dealers and remove the cat and re-sell the pipes. the converter is in the pipe-not the muffler. new exhaust pipes and slip-on mufflers will cost you many hundreds of dollars. an adjustable tuner will set you back several hundred dollars more. the xieds are not adjustable, just strictly plug and play. price new is a little over $100. that is all you need.

a typical stage 1 is intake, exhaust, and tuner and generally costs about a thousand dollars. what i am talking about will cost you a fourth of that and do just as good a job of eliminating heat on the riders' leg. xieds do not marry the bike or require any work on the engine control module--they can be moved from bike to bike--pulled off for service/warranty work. an '09 exhaust pipe will not have a converter in it.

do a little research here on the forum--plenty of info to make an informed decision--you might find a gutted cat for sale and some used xieds too. it is your money. is your wife happy with the bike except for the heat? you could spend the money you save on something else for her bike. JMO

09's have cats. Cut mine out of my 09 CVO Ultra and added tuner, slip ons and air cleaner. Runs much cooler and picked up noticeable power
