Default Bottom End Flush

The top end is off my engine now. I made all the checks and the bottom end is well within spec.

My engine has the Delkron cases, so I will be removing the bottom sump cover. The oil pump and stator will also be coming off too.

After I remove the engine from the frame, I want to flush it out. I have several cans of brake cleaner that I thought would do a good job. I read somewhere that you just don't want to spray around the rod bearings.

I also want to replace any or all seals afterward.

mineral spirits is the only thing we have ever used in the shop as brake clean will cut into the pores of the alloy and release dirt that normally would never be released during the life of an engine

turn it up side down for a couple of days then 1/2 gallon and splash it around pour it out and take the bottom off this time and let it drain out the bottom and then change the mail seal left side

Thanks for the reply John. Aluminum is porous so that makes sense.

I don't see how flushing the bottom cases is going to hurt the rod bearings. As long as I give them a squirt or two of oil before the top end goes back on.

Will I need a special tool for the seal ? I assume your talking about the seal on the the primary drive side.

a large washer will do the install on the seal if it goes over the sprocket shaft with a big socket or piece of pipe

if you have the cam cover off you can pump oil into the rods at its end. as it is the feed to the rods if not a 1/2 quart of oil in the lower unit when its going back together is what you do pouring it over the crank pin the rods connect too

What about taking the old seal out ? I've dug the seals out of other things but I really don't want to damage the sealing surfaces.

you could use sheet metal screws into the face and develop a slide hammer out of a threaded rod tap one side then the other using a vice grip by taking the end bolt out as its 3/8 X 16 thread
