I know it's not abnormal for a Harley to 'mark its spot' in the garage with a bit of oil, but how much is too much? I parked mine in the garage to work on it and the wife is spazzing out because it leaked maybe 1/2-1 ounce of oil on the plywood I put underneath it.
manji...that's about the size of a half-dollar. Clearly that is not abnormal for the older HD. I am assuming you are referring to your 79 shovel.
You are correct, I am talking about my '79 shovelhead. I talked to the guy that owns the shop where I bought the bike; he said to check the tightness of the bolts holding the outer & inner primary case together, also to check the setting on the drive chain oiler. I'm inclined to think that it is the drive chain oiler, as it pukes it out all at once when the motor is shut off.
Kent
'79 shovelhead FX/FLH hybrid
'78 Honda mini trail (the only Jap bike I have left)
Mine doesnt leak, however it does have the auto chain oiler. As I ride the chain throws oil on the back of the primary and frame. I then park, and I get a few drops where it drips off. No big deal. My buddy said the chain oiler will use 1 qt in 300 miles. (does 3 drops per minute when riding). Very normal.
you might also check the eng.vent hose (end) 60 secondsafter crankup or crankdown. Also,
the primary drain plug has a little lipped washer that easily gits misaligned, that plug very often is over tightened and so becomes semi-stripped. Also reccomend roses or slaps as anti-spazz measure.
