Default Shovelhead side or end Oiler??

So I’ve got an 80” motor I’m messing around with, the numbers on the motor say it’s a 1979, but the cam cover that came off is stamped 25218-70 which is 70-73 it appears the cam cover was welded and rechromed. So do I have a side oilier or end Oiler? Anyway to determine by just looking at it? I’m a little confused here

ok the explain

side oil was the first oiling system they developed and it spans to the beginning of Harley
side oil pinion shaft has an oil hole in its side of the end snout that protrudes into the bushing that has a corresponding oil hole - its an interrupting system - the cone cam cover import can and does have more then one mistake on it usually - and the dates are one of them

end oil 73 on to 99 and your pinion is an end oil shaft as I see the end hole - end oil cam covers do not have a weep or blead off hole in the back side of the bushing in the cover like the side oiler cover does -- its the 2 holes the blead off and the side hole in the bushing that they differ only

ok great so I’ve got an end Oiler, now the question, with the mismatched cam cover could any damage could have been done beyond the scope of an eye?

look into the smaller of the 2 holes and see if the bushing has a hole in its side it would face the hole in your picture at about 2:30 small hand

you could spray fluid or air into the hole against the out side of the cover at 2:30 and see if oil / air comes out - the center of the bush if so its the right cover

^^ Note that Casting Numbers do Not indicate the year of the Engine associated with it... Chrome however??? Not for me Unless I am the one who had the chroming done originally!!! Not Likely!!!! Matched and Functional Trumps "Pretty" for me!!!!

Ok so there isn’t a hole in the bushing, but when air is blown in the hole in the cover i can feel it coming out from behind the bushing

your good for a end oil system

the centripetal unit on the cam is a china piece of garbage - today they make them with bearings not metal on metal for the weights
