Take out spark plus and raise back wheel up and then put in 3rd gear, rotate rear wheel to get the right timing mark in the window. If you have a kick start you can push the kicker down to rotate engine. Put a flathead screwdriver into front spark-plug hole and gently raise the piston with rotation until piston pushes screwdriver to the top (hang onto screwdriver so it doesn't bind up or wedge itself . Look for timing mark. Make sure points are installed correctly and flat and no wires are grounding. Set point gap on narrow cam lobe at highest point. 016 to 020 gap Static time it with a test light now, you can find that procedure online. Make sure advance weights are not binding as well. The piston will top out on both lobes the narrow lobe is correct one
Anyone may correct me if I misstated anything.

Also check that your mechanical advance is not stuck in the advanced position. The grease will harden from the heat and cause the advance unit to stick in the advanced position.

I used anti-seize instead of grease when putting my advance unit together, as per the factory manual.
