If you want reliable then go primary chain with factory mechanical tensioner and isolated with its own oil.

If you want an open primary for the look and less parts, less weight then 1.5" belt. I wouldn't go enclosed belt.

Thanks newman. Once again stock-ish is good.
I pick up the bike this week with a bill of sale and the title (already seen the title). My friend and I are both excited about the prospect of getting this bike on the road again.
We are thinking an entire new bolts package for the bike. New head bearings, swingarm bearings & wheel bearings. I will inspect the existing hardware which may be used for mock up. We are thinking old hardware could be incorrect or just old stressed, stretched bolts potentially.

Seeings how I appear to have a Duo Glide front end, should I lace a 19" rim to the drum hub, or go disc... Hmmm... I do own a 68 Chevy 1T flatbed with drums lol. I am used to and am ok with drum performance (or lack of). That would save me some coin on wheel rebuilds (vs sourcing discs). Although I do see caliper conversions available.

For eye candy, here is another bike which has a lot of class. Especially the exhaust. I like the Flash Gordon throwback... I hope to have something like this on the black bike I posted, mix of styles (no pogo seat). Etc, etc...
I feel mine will start life with a lot of original. With wheels, shorter shocks & exhaust being the new. Probably a pipe dream as more replacement may be needed than I'd ever imagine...
All I can think is initial mock up for now.
Please bring on any ideas and suggestions.

I like the teal bike, the black rims are a nice touch and the discs will make it stop like a modern bike. Im also a fan of the FL headlight cowl.

Except they made it better looking. Makes me think old locomotive when I see a Japanese bobber with one and a fat front tire and no fender.

Harley's nacelle or whatever you want to call it looks right on a big fat FLH. I will go that route.

On the teal FLH above, I take it those hubs would be 73+ to run the banana calipers? And specific fork lowers?
Great looking wheelset the teal bike has. And a great bike overall. Could you imagine it with a 93 S & S and a 6 into 4... Oh heck yeah!

If the 72 FX your starting with still has the tubular swing arm that accommodates the juice brake then you need the square swing arm which bolts right in. Then you can run the midstar hubs, brakes etc.

Thanks newman. I have not yet seen the swingarm, yet I will shortly as I pick the basket case up tomorrow. If the swingarm is '73, it should be the square arm correct?

Squaring away my build area... I am ready to lay out parts. tic toc tic

Yup, my 72 came with the round one back when, 73 and later were rectangle.

You can run a disc brake on the round swing arm, but it takes some fab work, but definitely possible.

Personally I look for rear drum bikes, I want to see the wheel from the right side not the rotor. I believe a rear juice drum stops more than adequately for a stock to stock ish Shovel. If I was really worried I would convert the front only, but with my bike I am not worried, Your call, good luck.
