FLH Project Consideration
The son of a friend of mine put a fat 21" wheel on his 2000-something Road King and it didn't look half bad. Keeping the original fender made a big difference.

I happen to like both. My bars will be similar to either.
I will get a build thread going soon. I have to sort everything & see what assortment of bolts I have. Got my lift cleared of another bike. Then I will get a separate bench going for various assemblies.
Hoping to get ahead slightly on the mock up & take pics so I have something to post. I will post up pics of all my acquired parts here to marvel over, maybe next week.
It appears you are looking for comfort and an FLH would look better than an FX with a comfortable seat.
A rear (and front)130/90 is 25.21" tall. A 120/70-19 is 25.61" tall. A 120/70-21 is 27.61" tall.
A rear MU90 (140/90) is 5.51" wide...
A 110/90-19 is also available... 26.8 diameter & 4.33 width.
So... to me the most sensible combo is... a MT or MU/90-16 rear and a 120/70-19 in front. Virtually no diameter changes while giving the larger hoop visual in front.
A 21" front tire is about 2" bigger in diameter, and when fender adjustability may be needed.
Either way I will have fresh built Buchanan wheels w/black rims. The mock up will have the stock 16" wheels.
Sorry about all the numbers! But its what I have to do.
I officially took on the project today, a gentlemans handshake with my friend. He has the title! Lol
The tin is in very good shape. The tanks are unbelievably spotless metal finish - kinda blew my mind.
The bike has been disassembled for 15 years & his Dad is long gone. Its ran the last time he rode it and it had a coil failure apparently. He did not mess with it further as he was right in the middle of bringing up a family... He thought the AMF build was so poor he did not want to do the project.
It should have a disc front end, but has a drum... And the tin (or front fender anyway) is Duo Glide! Go figure. I think his Dad back dated it as it was semi bobbed too.
Maybe a Duo Glide front end? Hmmm...
My indy H-D shop is behind me. He gave me a complete thick V-Twin Mfg products guide. Cool beans. Thanks to Kenny. It has a lot of product.
I will do a starter button or lever on the solenoid, I like that old school location...
Yes a nuts & bolts package will be acquired when I know more what I need. He has bags of bolts but not documented - I can figure out some of it...
I have two Shovel guys in my circle so I will throw a thousand questions at them lol, and here too. :-)
I have a lift... I have the funds to make this happen. I will expect a year or two of build time. Maybe mocked up by fall?? Dunno.
I will do Buchcanan rebuilt wheels. I will look at Andrews for the trans (looked at the Baker 6 into 4 so far). S & S might be in the mix in the future. ;-)
My goal will be like this pic below in a basic function. ...A sweet bike I found on A Dennis Kirk Garage page.
I will have pics of all my acquired parts soon!
Thanks for all the positivity gents.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Hopefully the stock engine for awhile with a rebuilt or replacement transmission.
Another consideration is the primary drive... Go original chain, or what looks to be an 1 1/2" belt primary. That eliminates oil in the primary right?
Durable? Quieter? Waste of time?
I believe I have made a decision on wheel diameters. 16" rear and 19" front. I think that will be enough of large diameter bias in front.
For a visual reference on 19/16 wheels here is a pic solely for wheel size. Not a direction I would go, but I like the wheel size balance.
I really am trying to not over do this bike. $$ will add up quick enough.
I should be getting much of the basket case this week. We'll see how organized or not it is. My friend is pretty together.
