My 82 the points cover has the rivets at 12 and 6 o'clock which is a tough one to find plus its has s small black pin stripe on the silver raised ring. Was 81 different?
Probably not. Seems to be the same way. There was a NOS one on E-Bay for $300 that did not sell. There is also a mostly complete exhaust for big bucks also. If I can find the parts some what reasonable, I will buy them. Other than that it will stay the way it is. It is nice enough for me.

The Early EI had that "extra" plate behind points cover.. "blank" Cover with Flush Screws at 3 and 9 held timing "guts", then simple Cover was left with Mounting holes at 12 and 6.. Only way that Timer could Mount...I still use My Original Ignition System on the '79. Held over for Later EI for ...whatever reason.

The OEM electronic ignition is still in the bike Could have been taken apart for service.

Straining my Memory...But.. I do Not believe the original V-Fire Electronic ignition (Prestolite to us that was there) lasted even all of 3 Years...But...My Memory fades..
About 1982 or so the second iteration of H-D electronic ignition was installed... Recognized by the Cup on the cam facing the Unit..If I remember correctly..H-D still used that extra "cover plate"...Why??? IDK, I suspect to have something to Rivet the Chrome cover to!!!
The First EI (Prestolite) had the EI unit itself attached to that "extra" cover... then the Chrome cover...Riveted to it..

I believe that I read that my '81 FXS came with electronic ignition, which one I don't know. When I first got the bike I pulled that cover and I think it had the cup, could have been updated ? When I get a chance I will look again and see what else I can look up. The cover that I have now sits in a bit so that makes sense that the plate is missing. I wonder if HD used the plate and riveted cover to make it a sealed unit ?
I just went to the parts book and acording to it I should have the cup style stuff in it. Were these a dependable ignition ?

More than Most Aftermarket...I like them because I can simply drop a Sportster Unit (brain) in and gain just about everything Practical that I need/want.. Only thing that really acts up is that Pickup that the "cup" is triggering...And Standard Motor Products, makes a Very Good Quality Replacement.
BTW the Original (1979 I believe) V-Fire, (Prestolite) was basically what a Dyna-S is!!! Electronic Points...If you will

I got the things to take care of this area ! Screws and gaskets are on the way. I need to find some SOFT aluminum rivets. I bought bulk (10) gaskets because of the shipping price. I will sell a few in the for sale area when I get them.

i thought they were all threaded screw on. my 80 is
Rivets which I dont like because drilling them out will screw up the black on the cover. I bought a repop one like Ken so its no big deal, I have an original I'll keep in the office display case.
