Default Starter relay confusion

I am back with more on my 1973 Shovelhead FLH. In the parts diagram it shows a rectangle starter relay 71455-67 for the 73' and a round 71463A-73A for the 74 and up. BUT when I look at the rectangle style relays the parts people tell me it does not fit my 73 and says I need the round style. Color me confused. Another thing can anyone tell me if the hazard flasher switch is off-on or on-off-on? The original part number is obsolete and I am not sure what type of toggle switch to replace it with. Thanks for all the help you guys provide. Have to buy you a cold one someday.

What relay is on the bike now ? Eyeball ID in this case, 73 was a bastard year I've seen both styles on them, should be under the battery tray. Toggle was a 2 pole on-off if I remember right. It doesn't have one I'd use the round ford style, way more beefy.

There is nothing on the bike now. When I got it there was no wiring done at all. Put a new wiring harness on from front to back.

Yep, DPDT with 6 posts and a total witches nightmare to wire up starting from scratch. Needs 2 separate flashers also, one for 4-way, another for turn signals....

If you want it like original, I can totally appreciate that but if you want it to work without all the miles of wiring and terminals, I'd suggest a turn module like SDC or Badlands.

If it has the 1973+ tiny start switch, on handlebar housing... that big *** Ford type (round) relay, is gonna ruin the switch itself...too much amperage to "bring in" that Ford type relay... the Bosh (small squareish) relay is designed to fire at minimal current... IDC what the MoCo did...they are the ones that used that ridiculous rubber donut on the original FXR exhaust...even they were Capable of Learning tho...and removed that also!!!

oldtrucker, here is a suggestion. If the bike came with the battery tray, you can look at the base of the tray and it will give you the information on the type of starter relay used. The Delco Remy oblong style had a distinctive mount designed into the tray so that the relay is positioned vertically. Attached is one I designed for use on my 65 Pan so that I could retrofit a starter relay.. If need be I can dig out a correct one for you from my stash. I know I have a battery tray for 70-73 FLH models somewhere.

Here is a pic of the later style relay. It has two mounting holes in it and is designed to fit underneath the left front corner of the tray. The attached pic is from an FXE model but is attached the same way, in a horizontal position. The battery tray should have the corresponding holes in it

Next Post???? My Button on my handlebar is KaPutt..
I did forget about that little oblong relay they used in between there someplace.. I do Not remember them using excessive current to fire...so Maybe OK...Me? I stick to the Bosch relay.. something that MoCo Used for a Very Long Time!!!!!

Appreciate the info t150vej but will have to go stock for now. $7 toggle sounds a lot better than $80 so near Christmas.
