I am back with more on my 1973 Shovelhead FLH. In the parts diagram it shows a rectangle starter relay 71455-67 for the 73' and a round 71463A-73A for the 74 and up. BUT when I look at the rectangle style relays the parts people tell me it does not fit my 73 and says I need the round style. Color me confused.
The bike is a 73? But the engine has Delkron cases. And the frame has no tab to accommodate the back of a right-hand footboard. Was that tab removed? Originally a 73 frame would have had that tab, regardless of E-Glide or Super Glide. Im wondering how much of the bike is really 73 because it may be a good idea to work out exactly what you have before buying anymore parts?
Does the frame have a VIN and if so is it consistent with 73? Shovels for 73 can be early or later. Different frames, rear mudguard and taillight. Early-73 Super Glides had no indicators while later-73 Super Glides did.
Anyway heres a Service Bulletin for the relay for 197479 but notice it says 71463-73 while my parts catalogs list 71463-73A.

Several years ago I walked into an auto parts store, placed a non working starter relay from my 1977 FXS on the counter and said, 'I need a relay like this.' He came back a few minutes later and laid an exact copy next to mine and said, "here you go, one early Ford Pickup starter relay." Less than half the cost of one from Harley.

There is a reason old farts call it a Ford relay..I have equipment that still uses 'em also...Not My Harley's tho.. Even pre '73 models got Upgraded!!!
It is a 73, my best friend bought it in 75 wrecked. He piddled with it for the rest of his life and since he worked in a custom shop changed quite a few things including the case as they came available as spares in the shop. When he started he had a frame, engine and boxes of parts. I inherited it after he died and it wasn't much more than when he started. I don't know why he removed the tab but then I don't know how he broke a stainless steel nut off in the frame for the battery tray either. Had to just weld a nut over it. Just trying to finish it like he started it.

Well sure, my '77 eventually got upgraded to one of these manual solenoids.
Buck knife work to, if you are OK with maybe getting a nice notch in the blade!!!! Electricity is magic I tell you.
My Friend carried some Large Foreign Coin on a small keyring..Made a big deal out of it whenever he would pull it out to start his bike...something about it being like an Arcade game or somesuch!!!!
