ive read that these carbs use a lot of fuel. cant that be rectified by using smaller jets ?
S&S make a wonderful performance carb. They are easy to tune and make great power. “Some” carbs may be a little better on gas. Most of the ones better on gas will make less power. Some are much harder to tune. Yes… smaller jets (especially the intermediate) will contribute to better gas miledge, but you can only go so small.
I have run, S&S (L, B, E, G, D) CV, SU, DelOrto, Weber and predator on Harleys. S&S are always my first choice because They make great power, are decent on gas and are very easy to get in a positive state of tune. I love their pedigree, the company story, the heritage and the look of S&S.

mine runs perfect ive gone to the second lowest intermediate jet as it was running rich. the bike runs perfect.starts so easy stock 80 lowrider my hd mech said going to the lowest jet it will run lean
Mileage will be affected when a carb has an acceleration pump like the S&S has. People often wick the throttle at stop lights etc. The pump squirts fuel more than a jet.
Mileage is up to the rider more than the carb. The pump is a big part of the performance. Constant velocity carbs most likely will get better mileage but again it's up to the rider.
The S&S is considered a performance carb and should be remembered when comparing. Just my opinion.

thanks. i dont run accellorater pump ive been using this carb for 35 plus yrs with no problems
I had a "B" on my '76 switched to an "E" , used the same jets. Both carbs gave me 45 mpg (highway). riding habits probably have a great effect on the mileage.

Only one Ironhead gets an accelerator pump around here...I despise the things.. Certainly not necessary, so...I mostly turn 'em Off.. If an exceptionally lean tune, sometimes a Partial Squirt..

to me thats not very good mileage but i could be wrong i work in klms
The S&S converts dollars to Horsepower, no getting away from it....go with a CV40 if you want good mileage but are prepared to lose some HP. I took my S&S off as I prefer dollars to HP.
