Default 73 Shovelhead, Hard Cold Start

Picked up a really well built shovelhead chopper a couple of months ago and I’m currently working on getting it road worthy. Got rid of the bad oil leaks on the bike thank’s to you guy’s here on this forum! Thank You!

Seems I need to kick it over several times to build up compression to get it started. When it’s hot it starts fairly easy and runs really well. I’ve put over 50 miles on it so far. It does however, release a little white smoke. Not sure that it’s enough to be concerned with right now.

I was told the motor had been rebuilt, but I know it did not run since 2014 so it could possibly be a fresh motor that sat a long time. Everything seems to be stock. Tires are 20 years old, allot of tread left so I’m thinking it’s not gone far in the last 20 years according to the odometer, only 4,000 miles and the odometer works.

Parts on bike:

Electronic ignition: Crane HI-4, Race Mode off, Kick Start.

Plugs: Autolight #4275

Compression: FH Cold 58, Hot, 90. RH Cold 65, Hot 88.

S&S knock off carb (works really well) jets, 0295 & .072

Thank’s in advance for your advise and Help!

Several kicks to start a cold engine sounds good to me, are those prime kicks with key off? You say an S&S knock off maybe check normal starting procedure for a real S&S on their website.

Very good advice...Let me add..If the valves/tapets Adjustment are Not dead on, gonna start Hard also...Of Course Timing etc also.. Knowing that some EI modules need a Couple Dead Revs..I certainly would Check that.. There is a reason All of my new builds get Points at first Fire and Carb tune..change to whatever I choose after all is Good..for My Needs.
