I have an 83 FLH with a keihin carb. \\; I just put new slash cut pipes with mufflers on it. \\; The other day after I pulled into my driveway I noticed that it was puffing out white/gray smoke from the exhaust. \\; I talked to someone who is \\;very knowledgable with shovels and pans about it and was told to try to adjust the carb, and if i couldn't get the exhaust to clear up, then to change the jet. \\; I tinkered with the carb a bit but it didn`t seem to help. \\; I'm wondering if this is a carb problem or something else. \\; Any help would be appreciated. \\;
Take a look at the spark plugs to see the color: White is to lean, black or sooted to fat, \\; tan / light brown just right. \\;
If you can afford it go with the S&\\;S "E" you will be very pleased with the improved performance and jetting will be much simpler, you will be able to adjust not only the high speed jet but also the intermediate jet. \\;  \\;
Is the smoke coming out of both or only one pipe? \\; If only one it's not the carb. \\; White smoke usually means burning oil. \\; Check the plugs for oil fouling. \\; It may be time for rings.
it's only coming out of the top pipe. \\; i checked my plugs and they look fine. \\; is there another way to tell if its the rings other than the smoke coming out of the pipe? \\; what else could i check before i tear it all apart?
Do a compression test on both cylinders if thereâs a big difference itâs time for rings. \\; \\; Squirt some oil into the low cylinder and test again if it comes up itâs the rings if not it is valve guides.
It also could be a broken ring or a piston pin lock ring that came loose. \\; \\; You wonât know for sure until you get into it. \\; Nothing that canât be fixed with a little time and money. \\; \\;
