so is the kick back due to bad timing, or just the nature of the beast? any little tips would help big time.

There is no good reason to get rid of the electric start if it's working. A kick only bike needs to be tuned perfectly to get it to start easily. It can be done, my 68 is a one kick, hot or cold but the electric leg is great if it stalls in traffic. My 72 is tempermental, it either starts on the 1st or 2nd kick or you might as well push the button because I would have to kick it 15 or 20 times.

In my case it was usually a matter of not putting 100% effort into the kick. That is why I say you learn a new level of respect. A few cocktails, a cute little honey talking to you, and the next thing you know that kicker is going up while your leg is trying to go down, you loose every time!

Starting ease is a matter of a good tune. As pointed out a well tuned bike "should" be a one or two kicker. But add that cute honey looking for a ride and I can pretty much guarantee that hog is going to make you work for your ride .

The nice thing about the 80" w/ the electronic ignitoin is it makes it much easier to start than the old points. Not sayin you can't kick an older one in a kick or two. just the electronics make it so you don't have to be tuned perfect. If you got another bike I say ditch the starter.

QS78 baker makes a kit vtwin makes one (foreign) and there are a few others

yeah, I noticed that it starts super easy, and the timing is a bit off right now. I imagine that if I get it timed just right, it will make it just that much easy to kick over. I think I will start with the the kick start install, and see how I like it.
if all else fails, I have the 06' to fall back on when I gotta get somewhere on a bike!

Excellent, excellent replies to senors 55 chevy inquiry regarding swithching to hand shift. Had me laughing early in the morn. Kewl, loved the Taiwan Tedd comment, I have a Pep Boys cannister full of new V-Twin ****, eithe 3 thousands over, or under..I do mostly pre 65 scoots, so it was the only game in town, but I found a man in wyoming micihgan who sounds crusty as hell on the phone, but his parts catalog is ****ing amazing. But senor 55, be humble, get your lingo down pat.HD stands for hundreds of dollars..being kewl cost dinero..
screw it get a kicker on that high compression engine, Confucius wrote:"By three methods we learn wisdom", the third one is: "And third by experience, which is bittersweet."
Be well hombre..

have to agree with Mayanruben... I think I am just gonna have to go for it! my Dad and a couple old timers were telling me about a few "tricks" about kicking your bike over and actually getting it to start. I tend to listen when they talk because unlike me, the know what they are doing. guess i will just have to keep you guys updated.
