Squeek !
I stand corrected on the chain drive , glad you found it but be aware once they start the chirp it's a sigh the belt & pulleys are worn , Change time is coming and parts for the older ones are getting harder to get by the day , start looking now and pick stuff as you find it .
hmm...
good point,,, planning ahead is a great idea..
I will start looking for belts and two gears i suppose.
.
two more questions:
(1) how do you get that caliper off?
(2) ever use any belt "dressing" ?
thanks
marion..

I'd have to see which caliper you have the memory isn't that photogenic anymore
Hey we need some pics of the bike anyway , shovel **** is mandatory in here hasn't anybody told you yet ?
That must be the first belt drive and last Shovel. Go figure.
Glad that is fixed, now on to the rest of the Gremlins.
You may want to have a look at the straightness of the wheel / axle as JohnnyC suggests. Search Belt tension / axle alignment . This can, 'cant' the wheel and pulley and give you a belt squeak in another month when the clean wears off.

Mine starts to squeak every couple of thousand miles too.
I didn't have any belt dressing when it first happened so out of frustration I took a dab of anti-seize and ran it along the exposed 8 inches or so of the belt, just between the pulley and the belt guard on the outside edge. Just on the side, not on the teeth.
That little bit stops it for a couple of months for me, ( I ride 400 miles a week,) and when it starts to come back it gets another dab on the next weekend cleaning/checkup.
No adverse effects. The belt is original with 114,000 miles on it.

I'm just OLD and forgetful.
She is a really beautiful machine.
Dark and raining here in Carolina today, so the pict in the barn is kinda dark.
the "other" pict was from the prev owner, I think about 5 years ago.
