I know or at least think that high test gas has higher additives that are somewhat more harmful to Shovelhead components (carbs, gaskets, etc.), but I get usually 40 more miles from a tank of gas on a trip whenusing high test instead of regular. I never did the math to see which was cheaper because the distance advantage was the bigger issue. I usually use some type of ethanol treatment when running high test as well; again this adding to the cost of the high test price.
I mispoke a bit. I get 125 miles per tank with 87 octane and 149 with 93 octane; that is 24 more miles not 40. This is the mileage that I hit Reserve, generally 2.2 - 2.4 gallons.
What are others' experiences and opinons? Mine is a very low compression stock 1984 FXEF engine.
i use 93 no ethanol -- if your storing the bike for the winter with the ethanol fuel your askinng for problems big time -- find a place that sells 93 no ethanol
